£1 Million Prize

Scunthorpe Millionaire Street

04 May 2024 - DN15 8DL - Scunthorpe - £1 Million
Doing the wonga conga - today's Millionaire Street prizes have landed in Scunthorpe!

A BUBBLY celebrant got her neighbours to do a conga line in the street after winning a share of a £1 Million prize.

A stunned Ann burst into tears after bagging almost £182,000 - then stopped the traffic by leading other winners in a celebration dance.

The occupational therapist assistant, of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, said, "This is life-changing for me, very much so. You've just opened up a new world for me. I think my face says it all. I'm shocked, but so grateful and thankful.

"I think the most I've won before was £17 at my mum's bingo. I've got a lot of thinking to do, but I've got a nice retirement in front of me now."

Ann and eight neighbours in Scunthorpe landed bumper windfalls after DN15 8DL won our weekly Millionaire Street prize today. Every ticket was worth £90,909, but Ann and another player each banked £181,818 because they played with two tickets.

Ann - who has been planning her retirement - said, "I feel sick. I don't know what to do with myself. I don't know what to say. This is absolutely amazing. My watch heart monitor is at 113bpm. You've made my day.

"I joined because Postcode Lottery donate to so many great charities. A colleague's street also won, and I just thought that you can't win it if you don't play.

"I had been playing with two postcodes at previous addresses, then changed them both to this address when I moved here a year ago."

Now Ann will treat her mum, Doris, to a special holiday before planning her own dream breaks.

Twice as nice: Ann was shocked at her double win

She said, "There will probably be a little treat for me and mum. She wants to go to America. I've got a list as long as my arm - like the Maldives, Barbados, the Bahamas, you name it - anywhere sunny with a beach. And I can do it now.

"I won't do it first class because then I can go to a lot more places." Then she quickly added with a smile, "Maybe I'll do one trip first class just to say that I've done it."

Ann launched into the street conga line after revealing she'd once led the novelty dance at a funeral at which she officiated.

The celebrant, who runs her own firm One Life Ceremonies, said, "At one funeral, the man wanted a song to make everyone cry and another to make everyone laugh. I got everyone to join a conga line and we conga'd round the coffin.

"At another service, I put on some leggings, baseball cap and big black sunglasses and did a rap at the family's request.

A delighted Ann is already planning treats

"Of course funerals are sad. But I think you can have laughter through the tears. Everyone has had some fun in their life. If you can't bring some humour into the service..."

She added, "I'm happy for everyone that won. I don't think I've smiled so much in ages."

Spending Power

Two doors up, Doug told how he and his wife of 57 years Gil will compile a 'spend list' - and make it 'nicer for the rest of their lives'.

The retired engineer, formerly of Selkirk, in the Scottish borders, landed £181,818 playing with two tickets. Now he's looking forward to helping family, breaks in Britain and a new car.

Dad-of-two Doug said, "I wasn't expecting this. Very nice, thank you. It's fantastic and unbelievable.

"You have just given me something that I could never have dreamed of. It's hard to imagine getting all that money in one go. I thought it might be £30,000 or £40,000. But almost £182,000? No!

"We're both in our late seventies, so this will make it nicer for the rest of our lives.

"It will be spend, spend, spend. I think tonight we will be sitting down and doing a spend list. It will be a good list."

He added, "We've just been talking about helping our granddaughter buy her first car, so we can help with that. But all three grandchildren will be getting a treat."

Doug and Gil will sit down and make plans

The grandad is about to go on a dream trip in a couple of weeks when he and Gil travel to the Yorkshire Dales to enjoy a steam train ride across the Ribblehead Viaduct. But he's planning on more holidays.

He said, "We used to go abroad, but we just stay in the UK now. There will be some time away for us. A break from everything so no one can find us."

Doug also wants to trade in his Vauxhall Crossland for a Toyota C-HR hybrid. He said, "I sat in one in a showroom and thought, 'This is for me'."

Gil exclaimed, "Oh my God! What are we going to do with this? I just can't take it in. I'll maybe get my hair done and buy some nice clothes."

And she has also vowed to celebrate an important milestone in style later this year.

She said, "I'm 80 in September. I'll throw a big party. I wasn't going to, but I will now."

Doug then said, "I'll be getting the whisky out soon." Gil added, "I'll just be having a cup of tea."

Happy Pete

Along the street, Peter video-called his stunned wife Deborah to break the news he'd won £90,909.

He said, "This is absolutely fantastic, but it doesn't do my heart any good. I've got palpitations and can't believe I've won. I wasn't expecting that kind of money."

Now he plans to renew his crumbling driveway - and may head off to Canada.

Peter is planning a new driveway and a holiday with his wife

Retired industrial pipe-fitter Peter said, "There are a few mundane things, like getting the drive done, but we'll definitely have a holiday. We've been to the east coast of Canada before, but we might go to Calgary on the west coast now."

The dad-of-two and grandad - who turns 70 in August - may also treat himself to a new set of golf clubs to help get his 15.3 handicap down.

His wife Deborah added, "This is a shock... brilliant. We'll do the driveway and definitely go on holiday for two weeks."

Prize Guy

Their near neighbour, another Peter, said he'll treat his two daughters and granddaughter after landing £90,909 - as well as building a summer house at the bottom of the garden to catch some morning rays.

Retired steelworks locomotive driver Peter said, "This is something I never expected to happen, but boy I'm glad that it has.

"I think the garden will get done. We'd like a summer house at the back and get rid of the greenhouse and garden shed.

"Possibly a new car, but I haven't been thinking about it because I wasn't expecting this."

Peter will help his family and buy a summer house

He added, "My granddaughter is buying a house and getting married in Florida in two years, so I'll help her out. I'm a big softie where she's concerned."

And he laughed, "As far as anything else, my two daughters will take care of that I think."

The Scunthorpe win comes just 11 months after Millionaire Street previously landed in the town. Three miles away, 17 neighbours celebrated after their postcode - DN16 2LQ - landed the £1 Million prize on 17th June last year.

Good neighbours: Street pals celebrate their wins

Postcode Lottery Presenter Judie McCourt said, "We were back in super Scunthorpe for the second time in less than a year.

"The weather might have been a bit overcast and nippy, but there was sunshine on this Millionaire Street with all the winners partying on the road outside. What a joyful bunch they were."

On The Waves

The latest win has also meant a local charity has benefited - with CatZero awarded £100,000 by Postcode Community Trust.

The charity, celebrating its 15th anniversary, supports people of all ages across the Humber region with the main objective of growing their confidence through targeted programmes.

Pete Tighe, Partnerships and Development Manager, said, "The news of the funding has come as a complete shock to us but will be vital in allowing us to continue to impact the lives of people across the Humber for the better, thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery."

CatZero's 72-foot Challenge yacht is just one of the unique ways that the charity helps participants overcome their fears, gain confidence and build new friendships. The programme invites them to take part in an eight-day sail and the challenging conditions provide invaluable communication and team-building skills.

Charity CatZero happy with cash award

To date, the charity has helped over 2,000 people, with more than 60-per-cent of them moving into employment, education or training following the course. In the last year alone, CatZero has supported over 400 individuals.

Pete added, "We provide a helping hand for the community in so many ways; from supporting families and young people who have reached crisis point, to aiding the unemployed to get back on their feet."

Good Causes Globally

Today's prize is part of a draw promoted on behalf of Postcode Education Trust (opens in a new tab). Supported by our players, this trust delivers grant funding to organisations that provide education, particularly in emergency situations. Benefiting charities include Save the Children, Theirworld and UNICEF UK.

At People's Postcode Lottery, 33% of the ticket price goes directly to Charities, and our wonderful players have raised more than £1.3 Billion for thousands of good causes across Great Britain and beyond.
