People's Postcode Lottery and WWF Scotland urge groups to go ‘green’

Young competition entrants searching for their Grand Green Idea

BBC Scotland's weather sensation ‘Heather the Weather’ today launched a nationwide search for the best green community idea.

Heather Reid is encouraging community groups across Scotland to enter A Grand Green Idea competition. All submissions are in with a chance of winning a fantastic £1,000 for their green initiative.

A Grand Green Idea is a partnership between WWF Scotland and People's Postcode Lottery. It's open to schools, clubs and community groups. The competition challenges groups to think globally by acting locally in coming up with an idea which could benefit their local environment. Ideas can cover a variety of topics such as energy, waste, food and transport. It could range from groups wishing to buy trees for a local community orchard to improving the insulation in a village hall.

Meteorologist Heather Reid said, “This is a really exciting project, perfect for getting local communities to think about the effect of their actions on a global scale. I encourage community groups to put their heads together and come up with a grand green idea which will help improve their environment and be of benefit to the neighbourhood as a whole.

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People's Postcode Lottery added, “WWF Scotland and the players of People's Postcode Lottery share a concern about the impacts our choices make on the health of our planet. We hope that A Grand Green Idea will inspire community groups across Scotland to make changes to ensure their groups and communities become more environmentally friendly.

The competition is open to all community groups, schools, clubs and community councils with six members or more. The competition will be judged by a panel from WWF Scotland and People's Postcode Lottery.  Ideas will be considered on their ability to benefit the wider community, the long term benefit of the project and the ability involve a wider audience.

To apply, entrants must state their idea in under 500 words before the deadline of 30 September 2012. For more information or to enter, visit www.wwfscotland.org.uk/grandgreenidea.

WWF Scotland have received over £330,000 from the players of People's Postcode Lottery to date.
