Shelton Hospital's Singing Project For Dementia Patients Receives Funding
Shelton Hospital patients are hitting the high notes, with a little help from the People's Postcode Trust and you, the players of the lottery.
Last year, the Shropshire hospital applied for £2,000 funding from People's Postcode Trust. The cash was for their ‘Songs For You’ project, a series of sessions encouraging patients with dementia to be more creative. A fantastic community project, the organisation was awarded the full amount – thanks to your continual support.
With the money received, the hospital wasted no time getting the project up and running. The ‘Songs For You’ sessions are run by professional performer and singer, Kate Allan. They use a variety of techniques and style to train the brain. Using both well-known songs and new tunes to learn, there is a mixture of acapella and musician led techniques to create interest and support.
All of the singing lessons are themed, again to appeal to as many of the participants as possible. They include 60s, 70s, American Folk and summer tunes.
Instructor Kate has extensive experience working with this target group. Research shows that singing can really improve the lives of those living with dementia. The project aims to improve self-esteem, confidence and quality of life.
Funding projects like ‘Song For You’ is only made possible with the continual support of our players. We would like to extend a huge thank you on behalf of all the People's Postcode Trust funded projects around the country. Over £3.2 Million has been awarded to great causes to date, a fantastic achievement supporting community groups right on your doorstep.
