Children North East find best sandcastle builders

Life’s a beach for almost 1,800 north-east schoolchildren who took part in the 14th annual Sandcastle Challenge organised by Children North East.

The theme was “I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside” and that’s exactly how People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Ingrid Hagemann felt as she helped to judge the winning entries.

“It’s always a tough job, and every single year the standard gets better and better!” she said.

Sandhaven Beach at South Shields was filled with teams from 40 schools. They created seaside and desert scenes from past, present and future, with everything from Noah’s Ark to space-age fun parks.

The design and construction work was helped by leading architectural and construction companies throughout the region.

The sponsored event helps to raise funds for Children North East for community projects with young people and their carers. The overall winners of the Sandcastle Challenge Trophy were Steven Lee from Mott MacDonald, working with Western Community Primary School from Wallsend.

Children North East has so far received over £100,000 thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
