Families journey to the destination of their dreams through art
The National Galleries of Scotland comprises three galleries in Edinburgh which house one of the world's
finest collections of Western art. The purpose of the National Galleries is to preserve and protect artistic objects
and promote understanding of the fine arts. As well as displaying Scottish
and international pieces, the National Galleries run educational programmes to
engage and inspire the public. Players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised
£543,513 for the National Galleries
to help this fantastic organisation to continue its great work.
Families from both home and abroad have been taking advantage of the drop-in art room based at the Scottish National Gallery. Over recent months, both children and adults have been inspired by the summer exhibitions of Peter Doig and Frederic Church and made works of art that embrace the theme of travel. "It's called "Staycation", said Lindsey Hamilton from the Education Department at the National Galleries of Scotland. "Like having a grand holiday at home."
From collage making to modelling, there are expert
volunteers on hand to help to bring the participants' exotic creations to life.
People are encouraged to use household items that would otherwise go to waste,
thus promoting sustainable living. Their efforts have resulted in a colourful
mural that now decorates one of the walls in the art room.
Lindsey is very thankful for the support of players of
People's Postcode Lottery as the money raised has made activity programmes such
as this possible; "Without the funding, quite simply it couldn't be done. At the end of the day these things take a
lot of organisation and getting all the things together, all the material, all
the events and trying to tie them in with the exhibition."
Through the Postcode Culture Trust, our players support charities that actively promote social cohesion, as well as encouraging appreciation of the arts, heritage and culture. Other organisations funded by this body include the National Museums Scotland and National Trust.
