for the Disabled receive £100,000 from players of People's Postcode Lottery
Riding for the Disabled
Association (RDA) will receive new support from players of People's Postcode
Lottery, with funding of £100,000 just announced. This
marks the start of a long term relationship between the two organisations.
Players of People's Postcode
Lottery will help RDA improve the lives of disabled children and adults by
harnessing the power of horses and ponies for therapy and fun. Horse riding and
carriage driving with RDA really does make a difference, delivering lasting
physiotherapy, building self-confidence, inspiring friendships and providing freedom of movement and
access to the outdoors.
Riding has an immediately calming effect on the children. Sarah Millar, a teacher who brings her class to the RDA centre, described why the children enjoy their visits so much:“The children love their horses! For kids who find it difficult to make and maintain friendships, the relationship with their ponies is so important. Most of the kids can't get involved in extra-curricular activities and RDA gives them a chance to join in and belong.”
Louis, 11, who has an autistic spectrum disorder, was
thrilled to attend riding lessons at Riding for the Disabled Association. Louis said:“Trotting is my favourite part. I like to ride outside in the fresh air and my
pony Dillon enjoys that too.”
from players of the Lottery will provide vital equipment which is desperately
needed to cater for the huge demand for places. For every one RDA rider, there are another
four on the waiting list. Today, about 28,000 children and adults
benefit from RDA's activities, but there are thousands more like Louis waiting to
join in. Support from players of People's Postcode Lottery will be vital to RDA
to ensure that even more people's lives can be changed for the better.
RDA Chief Executive, Ed
Bracher said: “The support we have received from players of People's Postcode
Lottery has been quite overwhelming and is a massive boost to RDA and its
volunteers. Tackling waiting lists and increasing the help we can offer to our
groups are real priorities right now and funds from the players will have an
immediate and lasting impact on our organisation and the people we help.”
Trusts Manager at People's Postcode Lottery, Hazel Johnstone said: "The relationship between RDA and players of People's Postcode Lottery started in 2011 and has resulted with the charity being supported on six other occasions through People's Postcode Trust. Most recently players supported the RDA centre in Dundee with funding to buy new horse Mikey.
"On behalf of the Lottery, I would like to say how delighted we are that players will continue to support RDA on a grander scale across Great Britain. This funding will ultimately enable an increase in service users and ensure the charity's continued growth and reach.”
