Canal and River Trust is one of the UK's newest charities – having been created in July 2012 as the successor to British Waterways.
It is the guardian of 2,000 miles of historic inland waterways in England and Wales including canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs – along with historic buildings, archives and three waterways museums.
When canals were first carved out countryside 200 years ago, they were the hard-working arteries of the industrial revolution. Today 50% of the population lives with five miles of a canal, river or towpath and they provide an essential place for wildlife and loved by millions of visitors each year.
Funding received from players of People's Postcode Lottery will specifically support two projects:
The Guillotine Lock
Funding will contribute to comprehensive repair works that will enable restoration of this rare, grade II listed building.
Rufford Water Voles Project
Funding will cover improvement work to the Rufford branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, transforming the banks into a suitable habitat for water voles to thrive.
