Sistema Scotland, established in 2008, was set up in the belief that children can gain huge social benefits by playing in a symphony orchestra. The charity's Big Noise Orchestras in Raploch and Govanhill work with 1,150 children, ranging from babies through to teenagers, helping them to realise their full potential. Sistema Scotland aims to use music to foster confidence, teamwork, pride and aspiration in the children taking part, and across their wider community. This is based on the methods of Venezuela's "El Sistema" movement.
Getting involved with Sistema Scotland has a very positive impact on a child's social and
personal development, self-esteem, discipline and pride. In particular, children with special
educational needs, behaviour issues or unsettled home lives benefit as they communicate with others who have similiar interests and in turn experience a sense of belonging. There is a noticeable improvement in their
ability to concentrate and focus on a task. A newfound sense of responsibility and
positive behaviour is also apparent.
