One of last year's successful Dream Fund projects, the Royal Botanic Garden's Edible Garden has really taken root since launching in April 2011. Not only has the project inspired local communities to get outdoors and grow their own produce, but it has been a constant in the headlines, providing the Royal Botanic Garden with some fantastic coverage. Today, the project has once again been featured in the Scotsman Online. The piece is a wonderful review of the garden and the team involved in running it. It also notes how the Edible Garden has managed to withstand the brutal winds and bitterly cold frost – unlike other parts of the Botanics, unfortunately.

350 cyclists gather to tell the Government to reconsider active travel budget cuts. The ‘Get On Yer Bike’ event was held by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. This is a collation of transport, faith and community groups, as well as environmental charities including WWF Scotland. It was initiated after the Scottish Government released its draft 2012-13 budget. The draft budget indicates an increase in transport spending from £1804m in 2011-12 to £1884m in 2012-13 but a cut to the amount spent on active travel (to less than £16m). Figures like these go against the SNP 2011 election manifesto promise to increase the proportion of transport spending on active and sustainable travel. So walking activists and cyclists across the city were forced to protest against these cuts.

This week, charity Missing People has welcomed the launch of the Government’s Missing Children and Adults’ Strategy. This is a landmark event for the protection of the estimated 250,000 people who go missing each year in the UK, as well as the families they leave behind. James Brokenshire MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Crime and Security, launched the strategy at the charity's Central Office in London. He was joined by families of missing people including Peter Lawrence, father of missing chef Claudia Lawrence, and Rachel Elias, sister of missing Richard Edwards from the band Manic Street Preachers. It is hoped that the new strategy will reduce the number of people who go missing and protect the missing whilst they are away. It will also aim to reflect the approach used for victims of crime, giving the families of missing people access to support.

Searching All Spiders

Get inspired and become a house spider explorer this winter. As the winter chill starts to set in, you've probably already seen an increase in the number of spiders creeping around your house. Avoiding the wet and cold outdoors, they are seeking shelter in the warmer climes of your living room. However, instead of catching them and setting them free in the garden, Northumberland Wildlife Trust (NWT) – one of our regularly supported charities – is calling all of our players to collect them. NWT is taking part in a huge ecological research project at the University of York. This project is investigating the distribution of six large types of house spider. Of the six types, two are most prevalent, and the research team want to know why.

Vote That Counts Update

The Vote that Counts campaign offers charities the chance to compete for £50,000 funding. It officially launched at the end of October with a four-page spread in the Sunday Mail. Armed with logos, links and ideas, it was ‘ready, set, go’ as the charities got underway in their bid to attract as many votes as possible. And the campaign has been compelling viewing ever since. We're now half way through, with just shy of a whopping 20,000 votes registered when this article was published. Just yesterday, the Postcode Trust announced an extra incentive for charities to attract votes through social media. If a charity secures a Tweet or a Re-Tweet about their campaign by a celebrity or leading Twitter account (for example, newspapers, influential bloggers, MPs or Councillors, etc), then they automatically secure an additional 500 votes. However, the charities only have until midnight on Sunday (27 November) to create as much hype on Twitter as possible.

It's all part of Jungle City, a series of 150 eye-catchingly decorated sculptures. There are elephants to monkeys, crocodiles to toucans. The sculptures are individually hand painted and designed by an impressive troupe of artists. Their aim is to raise awareness of the conservation plight of these animals.

National Galleries Scotland gets regal fever. Edinburgh has had quite the regal summer. We had Zara Philips' wedding and Royal Week at Holyrood Palace. The National Galleries of Scotland also had the regal fever recently with their The Queen: Art and Image exhibition and a Right Royal Knees Up event to celebrate. Little ones and their parents were invited to put on their Sunday best and pop along to the Scottish National Gallery to meet the ‘Queen’. Everyone had the chance to shake hands with royalty and get their photo taken alongside ‘Her Majesty’. But there was no curtsy required. Sadly, the real Queen was a little too busy to attend. Instead, a Queen-lookalike took up the post on her behalf. Yet that didn’t dampen spirits – or the fleeting belief that the real one had popped along to give the knees-up the royal stamp.

The bee colony at the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Reserve and Visitor Centre at the Falls of Clyde has been described as the largest colony of its type ever seen. Established in May this year, the colony started with initially 30,000 bees. It now houses over 100,000 bees. This is fantastic news for bees across Scotland. The loss in suitable habitats, such as hedgerows and hay meadows, has seen a real danger of bee numbers declining. Brian Pool, a beekeeper with over 40 years’ experience, says the colony is the largest colony he has ever seen that has not swarmed.

Primary school pupils take to the seas to learn about Scotland’s marine life. Pupils at Ballachulish Primary School were treated to a trip aboard the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) vessel Silurian in May to discover more about Scotland’s precious marine life. Hopping aboard the ‘floating classroom’, the pupils kicked off their adventure with a treasure hunt. The game helped the children to get familiarised with the boat and its unusual hiding places. It was then time for the pupils to become Silurian volunteers. They learnt how to look for cetaceans and, perhaps the most exciting part, how to use the hydrophone.
