Vote That Counts Launches

12 welsh charities are competing for a total of £20,000 funding. Yesterday saw the launch of Wales' Vote That Counts. This online initiative gives the public the chance to award a total of £20,000 to Welsh charities. A unique campaign, Vote That Counts puts the decision-making in the hands of the Welsh public. The public are asked to decide where £20,000 should be spent. However, all of the 12 charities support young, sick, vulnerable or disadvantaged people across Wales, making their services vital to communities across the country. The organisers – People's Postcode Trust – know that the decision-making won't be easy.

Another player in the area also got a lovely surprise this week. By living in the same postcode sector (DN22 7) as the Diamond Draw winner, player Steve Williams won a brand new BMW 1 Series. Steve was thrilled with his win, saying, “I have never owned a new car before, so this is such a nice treat!”

Earth Hour: Beyond The Hour

Help to make a difference to our planet by switching off for Earth Hour. Earth Hour is the world's largest climate change campaign. The project started in Australia in 2007 and is supported by WWF. During Earth Hour, hundreds of thousands of people turn off their lights in protest at the increasing pressures being put on our planet. This year, on the launch night, people are being asked to turn off their lights at 8.30pm local time on Saturday 31 March to show their united commitment for a better future. By coming together, it’s hoped we can make a real difference to climate change and the future of our world.

One resident of Glasgow is celebrating the beginning of Spring with £10,000 after her postcode was drawn in our Saturday Street Prize. Postcode G52 2QU was picked as the lucky winner and lead the Street Prize team to Sandwood Road in the Hillington area of the city. Having played the charity lottery since 2007, Joan Butler was “very shocked” when she found People's Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt at her front door with her prize.

Miles For Missing People Run

Thousands run to raise funds and awareness for Missing People. Recently, Missing People held their 'Miles for Missing People' event in London. Over 1,000 supporters congregated at Regent's Park to take part in a 10K and 2 mile run to raise awareness of Missing People's work. Even though the weather was a little grey, it didn't dampen the supporters' spirits. Miles for Missing People takes place annually. It gives everyone an opportunity to come together, take part in a fun family day and raise funds and awareness for Missing People. As well as the more serious running events, there's a children’s fun-run for all attending kids to take part in. What's more, this year's event was funded entirely by you, the players of People's Postcode Lottery. Your support is priceless, allowing events like Miles for Missing People to come to life and bring together the families of those missing.

Dermot O'Leary helps The Woodland Trust plant one millionth tree for the Jubilee Woods Project. Woodland Trust doesn't like to do things by half. At the beginning of the year, the Trust set themselves an impressive task of planting one million trees in the month of February. And we're delighted to say that they achieved it in style. X-Factor and BBC Radio 2 presenter Dermot O’Leary gave them a helping hand planting their one millionth tree at the Woodland Trust's Jubilee Woods project at ZSL London Zoo.

Taking advantage of a 2-for-1 offer proved lucky for one resident of Finedon this week, when he scooped a massive £20,000. Winning postcode NN9 5JS was drawn as the Saturday Street Prize winner. This lead People's Postcode Lottery ambassador and rugby legend Scott Quinnell to surprise David North from Wellingborough Road in the town. David, 42, only registered his postcode to play at the beginning of the month. He took advantage of a 2-for-1 offer, entitling him to a free extra ticket for his first month of play. With his postcode being drawn as a winner, David doubled his winnings. His paid for ticket and his ‘free’ ticket are both worth £10,000.

Composting Set To Grow

In 2010, local Merseyside community group, Rotters Composting, secured over £9,280 in funding from People's Postcode Trust. All thanks to the continued support of our players. As one of the Trust's successful projects, a local photographer recently nipped along to find out how the team is doing and to feature them in the Trust's 2012 Calendar. Rotters Composting requested funding to transform an area of underused land adjacent to their Merseyside premises. At the time, the wasteland was unusable and of no benefit to the local community. Now, there are raised growing beds, new pathways and a beautiful wildflower meadow, with plenty for locals to get involved with.

Phone Boxes Go Green

Obsolete red phone boxes in Crailing, Eckford and Nisbet have “gone green” with a little help from players of People's Postcode Lottery. A Borders community group received over £1,800 to convert disused phone boxes into community information exchanges. These boxes will benefit local residents and visitors to each of the villages. Local MSP, John Lamont, officially launched the whole project at the Eckford Community Information Exchange (phone box) last Friday. The phone boxes have been imaginatively refurbished. Retaining their original colour and look they have “green appeal” as hubs for residents to exchange magazines, newspaper or books.

Award winning Scottish Chef, Nick Nairn, has teamed up with People's Postcode Lottery and Marine Conservation Society to put eating sustainable fish back on the menu. With certain fish stocks under considerable pressure, learning about which fish we should be eating and which we should be giving the thumbs down is more important than ever. Yet, the choice can often feel like a minefield. To make going sustainable as easy as possible, the Marine Conservation Society used People's Postcode Trust funding to create an easy to use Pocket Good Fish Guide, with an iPhone App and dedicated website to make choosing the best fish simple.

It's an amazing weekend of big winners, with a £100,000 Diamond Draw, a £10,000 Saturday Street Prize and a brand new BMW 1 Series to give away. One lucky Galashiels resident won't be giving up splashing the cash this Lent. His postcode, TD1 2RY, scooped the player a staggering £100,000 in the Diamond Draw. 69 year-old James Dodds from Cortleferry describes himself as the most unlucky person he knows. So James could not believe his eyes when People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador Judie McCourt revealed his £100,000 cheque. He was left utterly speechless and the win took a while to sink in. Meanwhile, ML11 8ST in Carstairs was drawn as the winner of the Saturday Street Prize. Lucky Hammers fan, John Morris, was thrilled with a £10,000 cheque, saying, “I am so shocked!” John, 66, retired in May 2010. He just returned from a break in Blackpool. While there, he watched his beloved West Ham United beat the seaside town 4-1. “It’s been a very lucky week for me”, he said. “Hopefully the luck will continue when we play Crystal Palace today!”

The Trust has just launched its new website, as part of its drive to continually simplify the funding process. The Postcode Trust has so far given over £3.2 Million to 628 projects across Great Britain. It offers funding from £500 up to £100,000.
Wildlife Trusts Say Thanks

Playing People's Postcode Lottery raises funds for fantastic charities like Wildlife Trusts Wales. 40p from every £2 spent on People's Postcode Lottery tickets goes to good causes in Britain. Since August 2011, Wildlife Trusts Wales has pocketed over £80,400 from you, players of the Postcode Lottery. That vital funding is being used to protect native woods, trees and wildlife for the future. Inspiring children to get involved in their local environment is a key part of their work. Lyndsey Maiden, Communications Officer at South & West Wales Trust (part of Wildlife Trusts Wales), took a couple of minutes to thank the players for their fantastic support and funding.

People's Postcode Lottery players had three chances to win big this Saturday, with draws for £10,000, £100,000 and a brand new BMW. Derek and Sheila Davies certainly left the January blues behind them, after winning today's Diamond Draw. Their lucky postcode, CF33 4BE in Bridgend, scooped the couple £100,000 and a lovely visit from Welsh international rugby legend, Scott Quinnell. Marlene Thomas, another Bridgend winner, will also be celebrating this weekend. She too had a knock on the door from People's Postcode Lottery ambassador, Scott. This time, Scott handed over the keys to a brand new BMW 1 Series. In the Street Prize draw, Pauline Purvis from Ponteland in Newcastle Upon Tyne was left gobsmacked when local radio star, Judie McCourt, arrived at her doorstep. Grandma of two, Pauline couldn't believe it when she clapped eyes on her £10,000 cheque. Playing the lottery since it launched in the North East, her luck came up this weekend when her postcode, NE20 9AP, was drawn.

Annual Charity Gala

Every year, People's Postcode Lottery hosts their Charity Gala, offering charities the opportunity to meet the team and reflect on the past year. With 2011 having been such a successful one, everyone is looking forward to the Annual Charity Gala. It is also the perfect chance to congratulate the charities on how much funding has been raised by the players of the lottery. This year, the Gala is being held at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh on the evening of Wednesday 01 February. The Botanic Garden will provide a stunning backdrop to review the year. And, having won last year's Dream Fund, it is the perfect location to announce this year’s winners of the fantastic £300,000 funding pot.

One of last year's successful Dream Fund projects, the Royal Botanic Garden's Edible Garden has really taken root since launching in April 2011. Not only has the project inspired local communities to get outdoors and grow their own produce, but it has been a constant in the headlines, providing the Royal Botanic Garden with some fantastic coverage. Today, the project has once again been featured in the Scotsman Online. The piece is a wonderful review of the garden and the team involved in running it. It also notes how the Edible Garden has managed to withstand the brutal winds and bitterly cold frost – unlike other parts of the Botanics, unfortunately.

Get On Yer Bike

350 cyclists gather to tell the Government to reconsider active travel budget cuts. The ‘Get On Yer Bike’ event was held by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. This is a collation of transport, faith and community groups, as well as environmental charities including WWF Scotland. It was initiated after the Scottish Government released its draft 2012-13 budget. The draft budget indicates an increase in transport spending from £1804m in 2011-12 to £1884m in 2012-13 but a cut to the amount spent on active travel (to less than £16m). Figures like these go against the SNP 2011 election manifesto promise to increase the proportion of transport spending on active and sustainable travel. So walking activists and cyclists across the city were forced to protest against these cuts.

Friday 13th is renowned as the unluckiest day of the year. Many people take days off work and batten down the hatches to avoid any unlucky disasters. But for five residents of Vermont Avenue in Glasgow, it's probably their luckiest day of the year. Today their postcode, G73 2LL, was picked in the Daily Draw, scooping them £1,000 per ticket. And the luck didn't end there. Some of these residents are playing with multiple tickets. Two players have won £2,000 and one player has scooped a wonderful £3,000. So for them, Friday 13th has been a very lucky day indeed.

Charities Secure Christmas Gift

Six Scottish charities have an extra reason to celebrate this Christmas. They have secured a total of £60,000 funding in a free online public voting campaign. Over 33,000 people across the country got involved in the Vote that Counts campaign. Voters nominated their favourite charity to win a Christmas gift of £50,000. Another five runner-up charities also had the chance to win £2,000 each. With such fantastic prizes up for grabs, the 12 charities involved pulled out every trick in the bag to get the highest number of votes. Yet, it was Macmillan Cancer Support that secured the lion's share. They achieved over 16,000 votes and with it, a cheque to the value of £50,000.

It’s just the best news, and couldn’t have come at a better time!”

One player in Greenock couldn't believe his luck this weekend, when his postcode was drawn again in the People's Postcode Lottery.
New Missing People Strategy

This week, charity Missing People has welcomed the launch of the Government’s Missing Children and Adults’ Strategy. This is a landmark event for the protection of the estimated 250,000 people who go missing each year in the UK, as well as the families they leave behind. James Brokenshire MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Crime and Security, launched the strategy at the charity's Central Office in London. He was joined by families of missing people including Peter Lawrence, father of missing chef Claudia Lawrence, and Rachel Elias, sister of missing Richard Edwards from the band Manic Street Preachers. It is hoped that the new strategy will reduce the number of people who go missing and protect the missing whilst they are away. It will also aim to reflect the approach used for victims of crime, giving the families of missing people access to support.

Christmas Giving Tree Appeal

Christmas is the season of giving. Everyone is busy buying lots of presents and treats to share with loved ones on Christmas day. But have you thought about putting an extra gift in your basket this year and donating to charity? Children North East, one of our players' regularly supported charities, is running their successful Christmas Giving Tree Appeal again this year. They are asking everyone who can to take part and give children and families that are financially struggling a wonderful Christmas. Donations of all types are, of course, welcome. However, the charity is hoping to get a good variety of presents (up to the value of £10), food parcels or monetary donations. Donating money can help fund fantastic experiences for the children over the Christmas period.

The Votes Are In

The votes are now in. They’re currently being counted and verified. And on Sunday 18 December, one lucky charity will win £50,000 from People's Postcode Trust. At the stroke of midnight last night (Sunday 04 December) voting in the Vote that Counts came to a close. The campaign has been a huge success, engaging our players, charity supporters and general voters to vote for their favourite charity to win an amazing £50,000. It has also been compelling viewing, with the leader board changing dramatically each week. Extra incentives to get each of the charities thinking a little more creatively also created a real buzz around the campaign.

Searching All Spiders

Get inspired and become a house spider explorer this winter. As the winter chill starts to set in, you've probably already seen an increase in the number of spiders creeping around your house. Avoiding the wet and cold outdoors, they are seeking shelter in the warmer climes of your living room. However, instead of catching them and setting them free in the garden, Northumberland Wildlife Trust (NWT) – one of our regularly supported charities – is calling all of our players to collect them. NWT is taking part in a huge ecological research project at the University of York. This project is investigating the distribution of six large types of house spider. Of the six types, two are most prevalent, and the research team want to know why.

Macduff Marine Aquarium

Children and adults alike can now get a closer look at the beautiful marine-life found in the Moray Firth - thanks to you, the players of People's Postcode Lottery. The small-grant giving programme, People's Postcode Trust, is funded entirely by players. The Trust has awarded almost £2,000 to the Macduff Marine Aquarium. The essential funding has been used to enhance the already popular Sea Lab. The Sea Lab is an interactive centre, which allows visitors to get a real hands-on experience of the seashore life with the aquarium's touch pools. The People's Postcode Trust funding has provided two new sets of binocular microscopes. One of these allows centre visitors to see the marine life projected on a plasma screen in high-definition.

Vote That Counts Update

The Vote that Counts campaign offers charities the chance to compete for £50,000 funding. It officially launched at the end of October with a four-page spread in the Sunday Mail. Armed with logos, links and ideas, it was ‘ready, set, go’ as the charities got underway in their bid to attract as many votes as possible. And the campaign has been compelling viewing ever since. We're now half way through, with just shy of a whopping 20,000 votes registered when this article was published. Just yesterday, the Postcode Trust announced an extra incentive for charities to attract votes through social media. If a charity secures a Tweet or a Re-Tweet about their campaign by a celebrity or leading Twitter account (for example, newspapers, influential bloggers, MPs or Councillors, etc), then they automatically secure an additional 500 votes. However, the charities only have until midnight on Sunday (27 November) to create as much hype on Twitter as possible.

Catwalks, glamorous dresses and flashing cameras are not what you would automatically associate with Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT), one of the 15 charities you, players of the People's Postcode Lottery, regularly support. But large, local fashion houses have teamed up with YDMT to bring their environmentally conscious and ethical ‘Fashion Gives Back’ event to life. Together with Sequel Fashions of Harrogate and Source – an ethical trading services organisation – vintage, designer and ethically produced women’s wear went on auction at the event to raise essential funds for YDMT.

Edinburgh - Its A Jungle

The street performers, comedians and tourists may have began to exit the Royal Mile, but far wilder beasts have taken their place in Edinburgh's city centre. It's all part of Jungle City, a series of 150 eye-catchingly decorated sculptures. There are elephants to monkeys, crocodiles to toucans. The sculptures are individually hand painted and designed by an impressive troupe of artists. Their aim is to raise awareness of the conservation plight of these animals.

Right Royal Knees Up

National Galleries Scotland gets regal fever. Edinburgh has had quite the regal summer. We had Zara Philips' wedding and Royal Week at Holyrood Palace. The National Galleries of Scotland also had the regal fever recently with their The Queen: Art and Image exhibition and a Right Royal Knees Up event to celebrate. Little ones and their parents were invited to put on their Sunday best and pop along to the Scottish National Gallery to meet the ‘Queen’. Everyone had the chance to shake hands with royalty and get their photo taken alongside ‘Her Majesty’. But there was no curtsy required. Sadly, the real Queen was a little too busy to attend. Instead, a Queen-lookalike took up the post on her behalf. Yet that didn’t dampen spirits – or the fleeting belief that the real one had popped along to give the knees-up the royal stamp.
