A Nourishing Start For Schools

Magic Breakfast provides thousands of children with nutritious breakfasts to help improve learning

Many children in deprived areas arrive at school in the morning too hungry to learn. Support from players of People's Postcode Lottery enables Magic Breakfast to provide nutritious breakfasts and expert guidance to 65 schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK.

A child who hasn't eaten breakfast can find it difficult to concentrate in their important morning lessons. They will not only be missing out on their education, but on nutrients vital for health and growth.

Thanks to player funding, over the course of one year, 849,200 healthy breakfasts are served to more than 4,350 schoolchildren. This has a big impact, with teachers reporting significantly improved concentration, behaviour, attendance, punctuality, and attainment among pupils who receive Magic Breakfast meals.

Research by the Education Endowment Foundation found that children in schools with Magic Breakfast clubs boosted their results in reading, writing and maths by an astonishing two months of additional progress per year compared to children in schools with no such breakfast. Players really are making a difference to thousands of children's lives.

One school supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery is Hazelbury Primary School in Edmonton. Over 1,000 pupils eat breakfast in their classrooms here every day. Headteacher Laura Pearce explains that this makes the students sharper and more awake. She also said that Magic Breakfast had a transformational impact on the school.

Meg Marshall, the headteacher of Grove Street Primary in the Wirrall, said, "Every child in the school is given the opportunity to have a healthy breakfast so that they are settled and ready to learn. Support from Magic Breakfast and players of People's Postcode Lottery means all our pupils can make the most of their morning lessons and helps them to reach for the stars."

To date, players have awarded an amazing £925,000 to Magic Breakfast. This has provided millions of healthy breakfasts in UK schools, transforming the mornings of thousands of children.

Carmel McConnell, founder and Chief Executive of Magic Breakfast, said, "With at least a half a million children arriving at school in the UK too hungry or malnourished to learn - the support we receive from players of People's Postcode Lottery is so incredibly important in helping us to tackle the problem.

"Giving a hungry child access to free, nutritious food and drink, in a warm, nurturing, safe environment means they can start every school day in the best possible way. We send players our sincere thanks."
