Big Noise Provides Big Opportunity

Sistema Scotland offers Big Noise orchestra programmes to children and young people in deprived areas

Sistema Scotland is a charity on a mission to create permanent social change through participation in their Big Noise orchestra programmes. The programme helps change lives by fostering confidence, discipline, teamwork, pride and aspiration in the children and young people taking part. This supports the children and young people to reach their full potential, leading to successful and fulfilled lives. This philosophy has a knock-on effect for their families and the wider community in general.

Over the past 3 years, players of People's Postcode Lottery have helped change the lives of thousands of children and young people in some of Scotland's most deprived areas thanks to their generous £550,000 of funding to Sistema Scotland.

The Big Noise teams provide an intensive orchestral programme for school-age children and young people. Above all, the programmes are great fun and are delivered by inspirational musicians. They provide opportunities for personal growth including trips, residentials and lots of concert performances – including at last year's People's Postcode Lottery Charity Gala.

The regular performances encourage everyone to be proud of their young people and their community. For the older children, a youth board, student teacher and student volunteering programmes have been introduced. Families do not pay for tuition, instruments, healthy snacks, trips and t-shirts as this is all funded through the charity.

Nearly 1,700 children and young people engage regularly with the three established Big Noise centres in Raploch in Stirling, Govanhill in Glasgow and Torry in Aberdeen. The fourth Big Noise Centre is to be launched in Douglas, Dundee, in 2017.

Alongside the Big Noise orchestras attended by children up to 11 hours each week, the programme includes Baby Noise and adult music-making opportunities called The Noise, which enable as many people as possible to become part of the Sistema Scotland family.

Colin McKerchar, CEO of Sistema Scotland, said, "We are extremely grateful to the players of People's Postcode Lottery for their fantastic support over the past 3 years. The money you have raised helps us change the lives of children every day by encouraging them to work hard, achieve and celebrate their success. Big Noise is about learning, fun and laughter, but ultimately our aim is to help prepare the children and young people in our centres to go on and lead fulfilled adult lives.

"Some of this year's funding from players of People's Postcode Lottery has helped us pay for the Big Noise birthday concerts. Each centre presented a special performance for their families, friends and communities, which were a fabulous celebration for everyone involved. Thank you!"
