Cat Care Continues

Our players are helping charity Cats Protection to protect and support cats during the COVID-19 crisis

Cats Protection is the UK's leading feline welfare charity. Its vision is a world where every cat is treated with the kindness and understanding that it needs.

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Cats Protection is working flat out to keep caring for cats. The wonderful support it receives from our players has never been more appreciated.

Cats Protection helps around 200,000 cats and kittens each year through its national network of around 230 volunteer-run branches and 36 centres. In 2019, it found good homes for 41,000 cats and reunited 2,500 with their owners.

The charity has received over £2.2 Million in the past two years from People's Postcode Lottery players.

This generosity has helped the charity to successfully find loving new homes for thousands of cats by funding essential Cat Care Assistant and Volunteer Team Leaders roles at its centres across England, Scotland and Wales. Players are also funding two cat behaviour posts (specialists who share their knowledge and provide best practice advice and practical support to centres and branches). It has also provided 10,000 microchips to its centres, ensuring that cats leave care with a safe and permanent means of identification.

Responding To Crisis

Nine-month-old cat Beebee came into the care of Cats Protection's Bridgend Adoption Centre as her owners were moving. She was heavily pregnant and shortly after arrival, she gave birth to five kittens. She now has her own pen as her kittens have been weaned and enjoys playing with her catnip sardine toy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, cats like Beebee are continuing to receive top notch care, with plenty of interaction from centre staff to keen them entertained, which is particularly important during a time when many cats are remaining in its care for longer than usual.

Stevi Cosh, Cat Care Assistant, said, "We're spending lots of time with the cats and doing everything we can to keep them entertained. Many cats are enjoying extra playtime - they all seem to love a good fishing rod toy - and we've also been using enrichment puzzle feeders to make mealtimes more interesting.

"We're really grateful to players of People's Postcode Lottery who are supporting roles like mine this year, helping to ensure that we can continue to go that extra mile for cats. We're looking forward to finding loving new homes for them all as soon as we're able to but in the meantime, we're keeping them happy and healthy."

As well as looking after the cats in its care, Cats Protection is also providing essential information for cat owners during this crisis.
