On behalf of People's Postcode Lottery players, we'd like to say congratulations to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's team at Highland Wildlife Park on the successful birth of their polar bear cub.

Royal Zoological Society of Scotland conservation work has been supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery to the tune of £1,350,000 to date.

The cub, which was born before Christmas, will be named in the coming weeks, as soon as the head keeper can determine whether it is a boy or a girl.

Footage of mum Victoria and dad Arktos with their cub has been captured on film in a special documentary about the park's pioneering polar bear breeding programme. This is the first polar bear cub to be born in Great Britain for 25 years.

Chief Executive Barbara Smith said, "The birth of the first polar bear in the UK for a quarter of a century is a huge achievement for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and the team at our Highland Wildlife Park.

"We are hopeful our cub will help to raise awareness of the dangers to polar bears in the wild. Collectively, we must do all we can to protect this magnificent species."

RZSS has two sites, Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie. For more information, visit their website www.rzss.org.uk.

Britain's Polar Bear Cub, filmed by STV Productions, was shown on Channel 4 on Sunday 18th March and will be repeated on Wednesday 21st March at 10pm on More 4.
