Working For Wildlife

Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international conservation charity working to create a world where wildlife thrives, from investigating the health threats facing animals to helping people and wildlife live alongside each other.

The work of ZSL is realised through ground-breaking science, field conservation around the world, and engaging millions of people through two zoos - ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Across the world, the survival of iconic species hangs in the balance. ZSL is committed to bringing wildlife back from the brink of extinction. Thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, the charity has been able to make positive change through vital conservation work.

Incredible Species

This year, with ZSL support, the Douala-Edea Wildlife Reserve in Cameroon became a National Park. An essential wildlife habitat, Douala-Edea is twice the size of Greater London and full of marine, freshwater, wetland and mangrove forest. This new status enables ZSL to assist in promoting this key environment for incredible species including forest elephants, chimpanzees, African giant softshell turtles, sharks and rays.

ZSL conservationists identified 22 different species of sharks and rays at markets, nine of these are threatened species and eight more had little known about them - a great step towards understanding more about the wildlife across Cameroon.

The facts and evidence gathered is used to inform ZSL's conservation action - and the charity believes saving wildlife starts with people.

ZSL has been working with communities to empower them to take ownership of their own natural resources by removing and reducing plastic pollution, collecting discarded fishing nets from surrounding waters and protecting marine animals. Thanks to our players, these communities have collected over 5,000kg of nets - protecting fish, turtles and manatees.

ZSL works with people around the globe to provide alternative sustainable livelihoods and protect their local wildlife.
