Spring Postcode Millions
April 20th, 2012
A 22 year old is celebrating after discovering she and her grandmother have won a total of £400,000.
The full winning postcode, SA12 6PY, was announced at a winner's party for players living in postcode sector SA12 6 in Port Talbot. Lauren Teesdale came to receive a cheque on behalf of herself and her 70 year old grandmother, Sylvia Pask.
Ms Teesdale said, "We have always said that we would share any prizes we won, as we split the cost of a ticket - I just never imagined the prize to be so big! Thank goodness for my Gran living where she does. I can now buy myself a house, and not have to worry about paying the mortgage each month from my student budget!"
Ms Teesdale is currently in her first year studying Mental Health Nursing at Swansea University. She also works part time in a local learning, disabilities and mental health home. She said, "My Gran doesn't really like crowds so I said I would attend the winners party, and call her with the good news. I will have to tell her this in person though, otherwise she may faint." Ms Teesdale said, "My Gran has always said she would like to go on a cruise - maybe now the whole family can go together!"
As well as Ms Pask's win, a further 42 Port Talbot residents scooped cheques ranging from £8,330 to £99,960. 20 players celebrated wins of £33,320 each.
Winner Nick Thomas, 28, was thrilled with his win of £99,960. He said, “This is fantastic news. I run a surf school on the local beach, so this will certainly help give my business a boost. I'll treat my girlfriend Liane to a holiday in Dubai too, and of course I'll pay off my debt. I thought it was all a joke at first - it's incredible."
People's Postcode Lottery ambassador and rugby legend Scott Quinnell was on stage, presenting cheques to the winners. He said “Congratulations to all of the winners, and in particular, Sylvia and Lauren who live in the full winning postcode. Enjoy spending your winnings!”
In a final surprise of the day, sector prize winner Chris Evans, who earlier had won £16,600, was brought back onto the stage to be presented with the keys to a BMW 1 Series.
X Factor 2009 finalist, Danyl Johnson, entertained the large crowd with a live performance.
People's Postcode Lottery has raised more than £17.6 Million for charities across the country. Missing People, Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres and Wildlife Trusts Wales were in attendance at the party to thank the players for their continued support.
Rachel Elias, sister of missing Manic Street Preacher Richey Edwards, attended the event in her role as a charity ‘Family Representative’ for Missing People, which receives support from the players of People's Postcode Lottery. She said, “It is great to see the positive influence People's Postcode Lottery has across Wales, not just with cash prizes, but in funding the vital lifeline for missing people and their families.”
More than £46,000 has been awarded to 19 charities and good causes in the SA postcode sector from People's Postcode Trust, a grant giving body funded entirely by the players of People's Postcode Lottery. Local sports group British Steel Port Talbot Cricket Club recently received a grant of £1,972 allowing them to purchase a much needed cricket bowling machine.
