Girlguiding is the UK's leading charity for girls and young women. With the help of almost 100,000 volunteers, the organisation empowers close to 400,000 girls to be themselves, have fun, build lasting friendships, gain valuable life skills, and make a positive difference. As members of the Girlguiding movement, girls join a global community dedicated to making the world a better place.
- Weekly unit meetings for the organisation's four sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers,
- A range of fun and varied activities, from vlogging and mixology, to learning about human rights and survival skills,
- Campaigning opportunities so girls can take action on things they care about, like period poverty and protecting the environment, and
- A wide programme of events, enabling girls to try new things, have adventures and make memories that last a lifetime.
Adventures At Home
When COVID-19 hit the UK, Girlguiding was forced to suspend all face-to-face unit meetings. Amidst the uncertainty, the charity was determined to create a platform where girls could safely access the fun, friendship and support of the Girlguiding community.
Within just ten days, supported by funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery, Girlguiding launched Adventures at Home, an online programme designed to keep girls in guiding and help all children and families stay engaged and inspired. Packed full of exciting tasks, challenges and games, Adventures at Home shares resources on wellbeing and resilience, supports volunteers to deliver online meetings, and offers a range of fun activities that anyone can try. The enterprise has been a great success, with 150,000 activity downloads in the first three months.
Girls and their parents have benefited hugely from the online Girlguiding experience, with weekly sessions creating a sense of normality and helping young people stay positive. One parent said, "I will never forget seeing my daughter's face when she joined her virtual Rainbows for the first time during the first lockdown. It was the first time I had seen her properly smiling and having fun for weeks. I can't thank Rainbows enough for giving our girls something to look forward to in these incredibly difficult times."
In 2021, thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, Girlguiding will continue to support volunteers to bring these experiences to girls, whether virtually or in person, depending on restrictions. Ultimately, the charity is looking forward with hope to the return of regular, weekly meetings for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers.
Girlguiding is always keen to hear from potential new volunteers, so if you're interested in joining and making a difference to girls' lives, you can register your interest. The charity has a range of different volunteering opportunities depending on how much time you have to give, so there's something for everyone!
