Postcode Millions
Rhyl Residents Win Big
Rhyl residents have plenty to celebrate, as together they shared £320,000 in September's European Postcode Millions. One player, Richard Witham, was luckier than most and walked away with a massive £160,000.
Richard, 36, was part of the celebration which saw 40 other residents in winning postcode sector LL18 3 share £320,000. Richard was revealed to be the only player living in the full winning postcode, LL18 3RB, and took home the lion's share of the prize pot.
"I'm absolutely speechless," he says. "I can't believe I've just had Scott Quinnell on my lawn. I'm glad I cut the grass."
Richard, who was joined by his wife Amy, had just got home from his night shift at his job when People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador and rugby legend Scott Quinnell arrived with his cheque.
Richard, who has been playing since December last year, was especially lucky with his win as he recently decided to stop playing People's Postcode Lottery due to cutbacks in the family spending. His postcode was revealed as the full winning postcode just before he stopped playing.
"My wife, Amy, was on maternity leave so we were struggling a bit financially," he says. "I had to stop playing for a couple of weeks to save some cash so I couldn't believe it when I found out I had won. It was lucky that my postcode was drawn while I was still a player. I've signed up again now and I think a lot of our friends and colleagues will do the same. My sister, Emma, is gutted as she lives in the same postcode sector as us. I'm sure she'll sign up as a player now."
Richard and Amy, who are childhood sweethearts, have decided to be sensible with their winnings. "Amy has been desperate for a new dishwasher so that's the first thing on our list," Richard says. "We'll definitely put some of the money away for our three children, Ethan, Jessica and Oliver. A trip to Disney World may also be on the cards as the kids love all things Disney."
As well as treating their children, Richard and Amy will be celebrating 21 years together in November so will make sure to have a big celebration then.
Winners and their families were treated to a drinks reception at the nearby Barratt's at Ty'n, the oldest house in Rhyl, to discover how much they had won and to celebrate with other players.
Another big winner was Alan Perston who walked away with £9,054. Alan, who plays with three tickets, was joined by his daughters Caroline, Amanda and Joyce. The win was bittersweet for the family as Alan recently lost his wife. Alan's daughter, Caroline says, "It's like mum's still looking down on us all and helping out dad. I really want him to spend all the money on himself."
Leanne Crossley also walked away with £9,054 and couldn't believe her luck as she only signed up as a player a couple of months ago.
Rugby legend and People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador Scott Quinnell, presented winners with their cheques. "I've loved being back in Wales presenting the lovely people with Rhyl their cheques," he says. "It was only six months ago that I was in South Wales in Port Talbot for the April Postcode Millions. Wales is definitely proving to be very lucky. I'm thrilled for our winners today and I'm sure they all have big plans for their money."
Postcode Millions landed in Port Talbot in April this year where residents shared a prize pot of £2 Million. In the last 12 months, players in Wales have won almost £4.5 Million collectively.
