Grow Your Own With Emmerdale - Week 5

A member of the squash family known also as zucchini or baby marrow, the courgette is an incredibly versatile and easy to grow vegetable. The courgette plant does like to spread out quite a bit when growing, so when planting it is recommended to allocate around a square metre of space for the plant to flourish.
The yellow flower of the courgette is also edible and is savoured around the world. One such culinary use of this part of the plant is commonly seen in Italian cuisine, known as Fiori di Zucca Fritti, where the courgette flower is filled with mozzarella (and sometimes mint), covered in a light batter and then shallow fried to golden perfection - delicious!
Get Creative With Courgettes
A more recently popularised use of this versatile veg for those who are looking for an alternative to pasta or noodles is to shave the courgette into spiral 'noodles'. This is commonly known as courgetti or zoodles, perfect for making courgette bolognese!
Tune into the video below where Jonny joins the Emmerdale allotment team to discuss how to grow your own courgettes. For more information, check out our Grow Your Own Courgettes Fact Sheet (pdf, 2.4MB).
