Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Reading

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Reading

In 2018, a record number of homeless people died in England and Wales. Many Reading charities have taken action against this rising threat.

You may be interested in volunteering with some of the best homeless charities in Reading. Donating your time can be a hugely gratifying thing to do, but it also plays a crucial role in the operation of most charities.

These charities couldn't continue without people like you giving up their time to help their cause. If you want to start volunteering, Reading has several homeless charities that need your help, so read on for more information about these worthwhile causes and start planning how you're going to get involved today.

HOMELESS CHARITIES IN READING THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Crisis

Established in 1967, Crisis has offered crucial support to tens of thousands of homeless people, allowing them to emerge from homelessness and build a new life.

Whether you're joining in with local fundraising efforts in Reading, heading into London to volunteer at one of the charity's shops, or helping out at your nearest Skylight centre - there's lots of ways to get involved with Crisis.

Depaul UK

Depaul UK also offers lots of different ways in which you can help. The charity has been fighting homelessness since 1989 and has quickly become an international force with a presence in countries such as the USA, Ukraine, France and the Republic of Ireland.

One of its leading initiatives is the Nightstop scheme, and you could become a host to stop vulnerable people from being forced to sleep on the streets. You could also volunteer with Depaul UK at the charity's Get up and Go sessions.

New Beginnings Reading

A young charity that only started up in 2017, New Beginnings is a local organisation that offers a range of services including overnight accommodation, providing food, warmth and other essential items, and assisting individuals with accessing long-term services that can help them become self-sufficient.

Having transformed the Queens Arms pub on Great Knollys Street, New Beginnings Reading serves food and non-alcoholic drinks to homeless and other people in need in the town. This could provide you with a great opportunity for volunteering with New Beginnings Reading. The charity also runs an after-school cafe for parents and children in need that could use your help.

Emmaus

A charity that's grown exponentially since opening its first centre in 1992, Emmaus now runs around 30 residential sites across the UK. This means homeless people with nowhere else to go can enjoy a roof over their head while they build up other areas of their lives to get back on track.

There isn't currently a centre where you can volunteer with Emmaus in Reading itself, but there are others you can get to in around an hour from the town. You could help out remotely though by running a centre's social media accounts, for example, or by shopping at one of the charity's online stores.
