HOMELESS CHARITIES IN WOKING THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Emmaus Surrey
If you want to get involved with Woking charities that make a real difference in reintegrating homeless people back into society, you'll be hard pressed to find a better one than Emmaus. This national charity runs 30 residential sites across the UK, providing jobs for formerly homeless people as well as a roof over their head.
Emmaus Surrey helps up to seven people at any one time through its community in Croydon, not far from Woking. There's another in nearby Lambeth offering a further 27 places. In addition to volunteering with Emmaus at a community, you could also help out at one of the charity's shops in places like Carshalton, Caterham, Purley and Wallington.
Crisis
Established in 1967, Crisis has been at the forefront of the fight against homelessness for over half a century. As well as putting together a plan for ending homelessness once and for all on the back of its research and experience, the charity also helps thousands of people every year through its all-encompassing array of services.
You could help out by heading over to Croydon to volunteer with Crisis at the charity's Skylight centre, which offers emergency and ongoing support, as well as things like training courses and creative sessions. You could also help out by catching the train into London to volunteer at the charity's head office on Commercial Street.
Woking Community Furniture Project
An important local charity that supports thousands of people in the area, the Woking Community Furniture Project was founded in 1988. Collecting and restoring unwanted furniture and electrical items, the charity works closely with local council agencies, churches and other charities to identify people who are most in need of its services.
The project enables people who may be living in poverty or at risk of homelessness to pick up items for a much lower cost than they can find anywhere else, forming a service that can help people stay in their own homes. From upcycling furniture, collecting donations, volunteering in the shop or providing admin support there's many ways you could volunteer with Woking Community Furniture Project.
Surrey Care Trust
Having launched in 1982, Surrey Care Trust helps socially and economically disadvantaged people of all ages across the local area. Focusing on particularly deprived areas, it supports low-income families, vulnerable young people and low-skilled adults who may be at risk of falling into homelessness. For the people it helps, the charity runs an array of projects and programmes including training and education courses, mentoring, counselling and volunteering opportunities.
If you'd like to help Surrey Care Trust there are a number of ways you could get involved and contribute to the charity's important work.
