Innovative Exhibitions

The National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) cares for, develops, researches and displays the national collection of Scottish and international fine art.

With a lively and innovative programme of exhibitions, learning and outreach activities and publications, NGS aims to engage, inform and inspire.

Each year, NGS welcomes over 2.6 million visitors to three sites across Edinburgh, including:

• the Scottish National Gallery,
• Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and
• Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

NGS has benefited from over £2.7 Million in funding from our players, which has supported a range of activities from landmark, must-see exhibitions by major artists through to tours for schools and free gallery bus, which transports visitors across the city to each of the venues.

Creative Engagement

One of its key objectives is to inspire the next generation to discover their creativity through engagement with the national collection, and support from players of People's Postcode Lottery enables the charity to do just that. As long-time supporters of the Families Programme, our players have enabled thousands of children to participate in fun, creative activities throughout the school holidays. This continued support has also allowed NGS to facilitate dedicated, closed sessions for children and their families from community groups rooted in areas of socio-economic deprivation. This is helping to break down financial and social barriers to participation by providing free transport, food, and supported creative activities.

This year, player support will help an NGS Art Competition for Schools. The aim of the competition is to encourage school children to interact with and be inspired by artworks. Children at schools across Scotland are invited to make their own amazing artworks in response to a specific theme, with entries being judged by a panel of artists, curators and other invited guests. This year, NGS has received over 8,600 entries from 31 of Scotland's council areas.
