Wellbeing Through Waterways
Canal & River Trust cares for and brings to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers across England and Wales. The charity believes waterways have the power to make a difference to people's lives, and that spending time by water can improve health and wellbeing.
With ever increasing rates of obesity, stress and declining mental health in the UK, Canal & River Trust is uniquely placed to make a significant contribution to improving the wellbeing of millions of people. Their canals and rivers run through some of the most heavily populated communities in England and Wales, providing accessible green and blue space where it's needed the most.
That's why Canal & River Trust works with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better. They know this will bring the opportunity to improve wellbeing to millions.
With over £5.8 Million in funding received to date, players of People's Postcode Lottery have supported a range of important projects. From environmental and heritage conservation, such as the 2018 makeover of the Marple Aqueduct and Lock Flight, to the Trust's community outreach programme Community Roots - launching on a new national level in 2019 thanks to £500,000 in support from players.
Richard Parry, CEO at Canal & River Trust, said, "We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of People's Postcode Lottery which has enabled us to fund a range of vital projects, helping to realise our vision of living waterways that transform places and enrich lives."
