Writing Letters, Changing Lives
Amnesty International UK is a movement of over seven million people and the world's largest grassroots human rights organisation. It protects people when justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. The charity investigates and exposes abuse, educates and mobilises the public, helping to transform societies to create a safer, more just world.
Players of People's Postcode Lottery have supported Amnesty International UK for over five years, raising over £8 Million for the charity. This has helped it stand in solidarity with human right defenders across the world, challenge restrictive UK laws and hold governments accountable to their actions.
All over the world, ordinary people with extraordinary passion are speaking out for freedom, justice and equality in their everyday lives. They could be teachers, nurses, journalists, politicians - but it's their passion for freedom, justice and equality that unites them.
New Movements
Right now, human rights defenders are facing more repression and abuse than ever before. However, people of all ages are now taking to the streets, and new movements are taking shape.
In 2019, Amnesty International UK's global letter writing campaign, Write For Rights, asked people to take action in support of remarkable young people around the world - those who are being denied their human rights, or are fighting for lasting change in their communities.
In 2018, around the world, almost six million letters and messages were sent during the campaign. They made a big difference to people who had put their life and liberty on the line to defend human rights. More than 250,000 solidarity messages were sent to Gulzar Duishenova, who campaigns for the rights of people with disabilities in Kyrgyzstan. In March 2019, the government signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
