An Update from Medical Detection Dogs

Here's an update from Gemma Butlin, Head of Communications and People Engagement, at supported charity Medical Detection Dogs. To date, players have raised £3,575,000 for their work.

07 August 2026

Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to save lives using their amazing, natural superpower - their sense of smell.

Players of Postcode Lottery help us train Medical Alert Assistance Dogs to support people with complex health conditions when they are in danger of having a potentially life-threatening medical event, so they can take the necessary action and prevent hospital admission.

Using the power of their nose, our assistance dogs can be trained to detect even the faintest changes in the smell of their human partner and alert well before they are aware that an episode is about to occur.

Conditions such as diabetes, severe allergies, PoTs, unexplained hypoglycaemia and blackouts are among those that the dogs can be trained to detect and their alerts not only save lives on a daily basis, they help rebuild confidence and independence for those partnered with them.

Many of our clients have gone from barely leaving the house but for medical appointments to returning to work, travelling and restarting hobbies they once loved but thought they’d never be able to do again.

Players also help us train our world-leading Bio Detection Dogs, who can detect even the tiniest smells associated with diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s, Pseudomonas and bacterial infections.

This pioneering work could help scientists and medics develop faster, cheaper, non-invasive methods of diagnosis that could impact upon thousands of lives.

This work is only possible due to the kind-heartedness and generosity of those who have donated to its cause, particularly players of Postcode Lottery.
