Thringstone Millionaire Street
Kind-hearted Mel Woolley will treat her big sister to a 'first class' Christmas break in New York to celebrate her sibling's cancer going into remission - after winning £83,333 with People's Postcode Lottery.
Mel got a call to say she was a winner a day after doctors broke the good news to sibling Dee Woolley.
Now the pair, of Thringstone, Leicestershire, are jetting to the Big Apple in December to tick off a bucket list dream.
Bubbly Mel said: "I'm taking my sister to New York in December. We have the first week of December off and going there has been on the bucket list. We'll do all the sights. We'll go first class and turn left on the plane."
Mel and Dee are planning a New York trip celebration with the winningsDee added: "I want to see the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas tree after watching Home Alone."
Mel shared £1 Million with nine other neighbours after LE67 8NW landed today's Millionaire Street prize in Thringstone. Every ticket was worth £83,333, but one player pocketed £249,999 with three tickets.
Mel revealed her win had come after a 'tough year' for the family - but said landing it in the same week as her sis's good news had brought them all joy.
She said: "Anything for me was going to be lovely. It’s just something you don't think about and hope it'll happen one day. I didn't expect it to be this much. It's amazing, I'm over the moon.
"We’ve been buzzing this week. I’ve not slept. My sister got told her cancer was in remission and the next day I found out I'd won."
Car parts packer Dee said: "It's a year tomorrow since I had my operation. When I was told I was in remission I was ecstatic.
"It was such a hard year for me and the family when I was going through chemotherapy and radiation. Losing my hair was hard. It’s a big part of your personality."
A few doors along, Liz Sibson scooped £249,999 playing with three tickets - then said a visit from a robin at her holiday caravan was a sign foretelling the good news.
"Before I got the email, I was in the bathroom of the caravan and I saw a robin sat on the fence outside. I went outside and it went onto the tree next to me. I thought, 'that's mum and dad sending me a message'."
Liz scooped an incredible £249,999 playing with three tickets"Then I saw something on TV about Postcode Lottery and mentioned to my husband that we’d not had anything from the Postcode Lottery for a long time. Next thing I get a message and I’ve won!"
She added: "This is absolutely bloody amazing. I've always said I've got a red door and no-one's come knocking."
Now the learning support assistant wants to upgrade their mobile home as well as treat the family, including three sons, three daughters and four grandchildren.
Along the street overjoyed Jane Hislop told how the £83,333 win has come after three years of torment - but she came close to cancelling her ticket.
She said: “The other week I almost cancelled it. But I just thought it would be sod's law and here we are.”
Jane is still living with health issues after suffering serious injuries in a car crash on New Year's Eve 2022.
Jane has plans to treat the family with her winningsThen in May this year, she was made redundant from her job in a printing firm.
Jane said: "On New Year’s Eve 2022, I was out with my mother-in-law and was going through traffic lights and another car went through the lights and hit me side on.
"I've been working from home for just over two years. But the injuries started affecting my work. There was a restructure, and I was made redundant."
Jane told how the win has come as she and retired postman husband David sold their 'forever home' to move to a bungalow.
She said: “I had problems with my back, and I was struggling with the stairs. My mother-in-law has had a couple of falls too. We're pooling our houses together and we’ve bought a bungalow.
“This was going to be our forever home. But we've sold it and we've got plans with what we want to do to the bungalow.
“Things are good and this will make it even better. It has come at a good time. It's a lot of money and will make a difference.”
She's planning to treat her family - including her two brothers, sister, three nephews and niece - to a holiday in Norfolk.
Mel Woolley's next door neighbour Jacqueline Ward also pocketed a cheque for £83,333 and revealed she and hubby Clive may upgrade their motorhome to go on more travels.
Jacqueline and Clive will buy a new motorhomeJacqueline revealed they’ll think about splashing out on a newer motorhome after travelling tens of thousands of miles across Europe in their 17-year-old four-berth Swift.
The mum-of-three said: "I've been playing Postcode Lottery since it started and I always thought, 'one day'. I’m lost for words now. We're really going to do things with this.
“We've had our motorhome for 16 or 17 years now and it’s getting a bit old.”
The neighbours all started playing Postcode Lottery to help local, national and international charities.
Neighbours Jacqueline, Mel and Jane were overjoyedThey were thrilled to learn that their Millionaire Street win means funding boosts for charities in their area.
