A group of people joyfully celebrate holding £30,000 lottery prize cheques, standing on a road with a man wearing a red jacket

Awsworth £30,000 Prize

Heartbroken Keith Briggs choked back tears as he picked up his wife's Postcode Lottery win ten days after she tragically died.

Poorly Jennifer passed away suddenly in hospital six weeks after being taken in with a broken leg. An emotional Keith took one look at her £30,000 cheque and said: “This is unbelievable. It's ironic that we get this after Jennifer's gone."

“My wife is up there now smiling. That's what I put this down to.”

Keith joined 13 neighbours in Awsworth in Nottinghamshire after NG16 2SY landed our £30,000 prize on Friday 12 June. Every ticket was worth £30,000, but two players doubled their winnings to £60,000 by playing with two tickets.

Keith is planning to honour his wife's memory with a holiday to Cyprus, where they'd planned to go just before Jennifer's accident. Keith said: “Jennifer fractured her leg two days before we were due to go to Cyprus. The day before she passed away, that was all she talked about.

“We used to go at Christmas and New Year, but COVID put paid to that... I’ll go back now... I can have the time of my life with this and still think about Jennifer.”

Further up the street, Mel Williamson pocketed £30,000 shortly before starting her shift as an NHS community nurse. Now she’s dreaming of a family holiday to Disney with her partner and daughters. And it comes as they are all set to pack up and move to a nearby new-build house in the village.

Mel said: “We’re just in the process of selling the house and moving to a bigger one, so I can get more things for it."

Helping the family

Mel continued: “It's incredible - and has happened just weeks before we changed our postcode.

“I can plan a trip to Disney in Florida... It will make a massive difference to the family, that's the important thing.”

Mel added: “I start work at 12 o’clock. There's no way I can ring in and say I can't come in to work because I'm in shock. I've got patients that rely on me!"

Opening doors

A few doors along, Tom Needham and wife Jodie are dreaming of a new motor. Tom said: “It’s not really sunk in. You see it on the TV and it’s not that you don’t believe it, but you don’t expect it. It opens a few doors for us in life... We were going to get a new car anyway and this means we can look at something different.”

Admin worker Jodie chipped in: “Like a Cupra!”

Deserving causes

Today's prize is part of a draw promoted on behalf of Postcode Global Trust which supports charities such as Sightsavers and WaterAid.

Players aren't the only ones who benefit from Postcode Lottery. A minimum of 30% of each ticket price goes to charities and good causes. Thanks to our fantastic players, more than £1.8 Billion has been raised for thousands of deserving projects.
