Kilmarnock Millionaire Street
A line-dancing teacher has boot-scooted her way into a £200,000 People’s Postcode Lottery windfall - and she’ll live out her cowgirl dreams in Nashville.
Gran-of-three Joyce Butchart celebrated landing a share of a £1 Million prize by tapping out a couple of steps in the middle of her street.
For foster carer Joyce, who’s spent 29 years teaching line dancing, the win means one thing: the home of honky-tonk is finally within reach.
Joyce and Danny Butchart with Judie McCourtShe said: "It’s unbelievable. It’s life-changing for us. When I saw the amount it was absolutely amazing. My legs went to jelly."
Joyce, of Kilmarnock, added: "My life is line dancing. I’ve taught line dancing for almost 30 years, and I’ve always wanted to go to Nashville. And now… I’m going."
Joyce and four neighbours in Kilmarnock shared the lottery’s £1 Million Millionaire Street prize when KA3 2HQ was announced as today's winner. Each winning ticket was worth £200,000.
It’s the seventh postcode to win £1 Million in the last seven days. People's Postcode Lottery announced a bumper week of prizes which saw seven postcodes land a combined £7 Million.
Joyce and husband Danny Butchart were both stunned when a camera crew turned up at their front door - to reveal a much bigger prize sum than they ever expected.
She said: "My friend won £1,000 on Postcode Lottery last year but the lottery didn’t come to her house. I thought maybe like £5,000… at a push.
"But £200,000 is just fantastic."
Joyce has hosted line dance classes most weeknights across Ayrshire since 1996, and she’s not planning on hanging up her dancing shoes anytime soon.
She said: "I absolutely love it. I’ve no plans to retire - why would I? I’d only go dancing anyway!
"I’ll be practicing a routine later - I’ve got my class tonight. But after all of this, I don’t know how I’ll remember any of the steps."
Joyce danced in the street after netting £200,000Her dream has always been simple: Nashville.
Joyce said: "I’ve always fancied going to Nashville and Memphis. This might finally be the answer to that.
"One of my dancers just sent a video from Nashville - dancing with a cowboy! Now I can go myself."
But away from the glitter and the two-step, Joyce is a pillar of her community.
She’s been a foster carer for 20 years, with her current young person, Derek, soon transitioning to independent support.
Joyce said: "We went through our whole fostering history last week and it was emotional.
"You forget how many children you’ve had and the difference you’ve hopefully made. I’ve loved it. It’s been so fulfilling.
"Derek will be our last foster, as we’re getting older now. He wants a gaming computer, so I think we’ll be able to sort that out for him."
Joyce also revealed that the money will help with a transformative operation for her husband Danny.
Danny stares lovingly at his winning wifeShe said: "Danny’s had problems with his eyes. He’s had no joy from the doctors. He’s wanting eyelid surgery - this money will definitely go towards that."
Her husband of 48 years Danny - a retired welding inspector - stood by her side, shaking his head in shock.
He laughed and added: "We can definitely have a decent 50th anniversary now. Maybe the Maldives or something."
The Butcharts, who have three daughters and three grandchildren, said the win was the ‘best Christmas present ever.’
Joyce said: "We said if it was £5,000, we’d have been really happy with that, which would pay for an amazing Christmas for all the family. It’ll definitely be a Christmas to remember now."
She added: "My eldest girl said, ‘If anyone was ever going to win, it would be you mum - you’re the luckiest person.’
"I mean, I’ve won a few times at the bingo…"
Joyce wasn’t the only lucky one. Four of her neighbours won too.
Joyce says she’s won her ‘fair share’ but nothing comparesShe said: "It’s lovely. We’ve got a really nice and peaceful street. Everyone’s buzzing.
"You never believe this kind of thing will ever happen to your street… until it does."
