Volunteering For Animal Charities In Bournemouth

Volunteering For Animal Charities In Bournemouth

According to the RSPCA, almost half of all British households own a pet. With over 50 million animals of all kinds of shapes and sizes part of families across the UK, many of those animals are poorly treated or abused. The same charity received over 1.1 million calls to its 24-hour cruelty line in 2018, with inspectors investigating more than 130,000 complaints of cruelty and neglect each year.

Whether it's protecting pets from abuse, campaigning for animal rights or protecting animals that live in the wild, there are lots of reasons why you may want to get involved with volunteering in this area. Donating your time to one or more of the animal charities Bournemouth plays host to is a wonderful way to help a cause that you may feel passionately about.

As well as doing a good deed that's likely to be hugely rewarding, volunteering can also be great for learning new skills, building your CV and starting on a career in the charity sector. If you're looking to start volunteering Bournemouth has lots of great animal charities to choose from.

ANIMAL CHARITIES IN BOURNEMOUTH THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT

RSPCA

The UK's largest animal welfare charity, the RSPCA, traces its origins back to 1824. Founded as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, it only took 13 years for the charity to gain royal patronage, which it's held ever since.

The RSPCA Bournemouth, New Forest & District Branch can be found on Richmond Park Road in Bournemouth, and offers reduced-cost veterinary services to animals in the area. You could help out by donating bric-a-brac which can be sold at fundraising events or helping to stage events. There are plenty of ways to support or volunteer with the RSPCA.

Cats Protection

Set up in 1927, Cats Protection has become Britain's leading feline charity with approximately 250 volunteer-run branches and 40 centres across the UK. The Bournemouth & District branch helps with the rehoming and neutering of hundreds of cats each year, while also raising awareness and providing information.

People's Postcode Lottery players have raised over £3 Million so far for Cats Protection. You can also help the Bournemouth & District branch by fostering a cat, transporting animals to and from adoption homes and volunteering at Cats Protection fundraising events.

Dogs Trust

One of our best-supported charities, our players have raised well over £14 Million to date for Dogs Trust. A fantastic charity that has a network of around 20 rehoming centres that come to the rescue of over 15,000 animals each year, the nearest Dogs Trust centre to Bournemouth is just under 30 miles away in Salisbury.

You could help out by fostering a dog temporarily, or adopting one permanently. You might also volunteer with Dogs Trust or even donate through your wedding favours.

Wildlife Trusts

Our players have raised over £15 Million so far for the Wildlife Trusts. A network of trusts that's been built up over more than a century, it looks after over 2,300 nature reserves which cover almost 100,000 hectares of land.

This gives important local wildlife the biggest chance possible to survive and thrive, with the Dorset Wildlife Trust based in Dorchester just over 25 miles east of Bournemouth and operating around the county. You could help out the Wildlife Trusts by volunteering at a visitor centre, joining a conservation work party or carrying out wildlife surveys.

PDSA

If you're looking to support Bournemouth charities that help lots of animals in need, PDSA is a great cause to get involved with. Our players certainly agree, having raised over £11 Million and counting for this great charity, which celebrated its centenary in 2017.

PDSA is an invaluable safety net for people who can't afford to provide their pets with the veterinary care they need. Most importantly, the charity's a lifeline for the animals it helps. It has around 50 pet hospitals across the UK, including one in Bournemouth on Castle Lane West. To help out, you could volunteer with PDSA at one of its charity shops across the local area, or even donate things to be sold.
