Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Cambridge

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Cambridge

Most of us would agree that just one person sleeping on the streets is one too many. Cambridge had almost 30 rough sleepers in 2018, while over 150 people are classed as homeless. If this is something that you want to help to change, there are several Cambridge charities you can get involved with.

Volunteering can be a hugely satisfying thing to do, while most charities couldn't function without the support of people like you who regularly give up their time. If you're only just starting out on your journey of volunteering Cambridge has many organisations that could be perfect for you.

As well as making a genuine difference, you can learn a range of new skills that can help you in the future, while you may also find you make some great new friends along the way. So take a look at some of the best homeless charities Cambridge offers below, and look forward to getting stuck into some valuable volunteering work.

HOMELESS CHARITIES IN CAMBRIDGE THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Crisis

Founded in 1967 in the face of a growing homelessness crisis, this charity has enabled tens of thousands of people to put homelessness firmly in their past. As well as undertaking lots of vital research, Crisis also campaigns for change at a political level and helps people through its network of Skylight centres.

You could help out by volunteering at your local centre or charity shop, or by lending your support to the charity's fundraising efforts in Cambridge. Our players have raised over £6 Million and counting for this worthwhile cause.

Depaul UK

Another worthwhile cause that carries out huge amounts of wonderful work both at home and abroad, our players have raised over £12 Million so far for Depaul UK. Having started in 1989, the charity quickly spread right across the UK, before continuing its mission to end homelessness in countries such as Slovakia, France, Ukraine and the USA.

Depaul's Nightstop scheme provides a vital safety net in the fight to stop homeless people from sleeping rough, and opening up your home as a volunteer can be a wonderful way to help. Alternatively, you may prefer to get involved with the charity's nearest Get-up and Go sessions or see if there's a local sporting programme you can help with.

Emmaus Cambridge

The first Emmaus centre opened in 1992, and the charity has gone from strength to strength. It now runs around 30 residential sites across the UK, including one in Landbeach approximately five miles north of the centre of Cambridge.

The centres provide homeless people with a place to stay for as long as they need, while they get their lives back on track. With a local shop as well as an online one that always needs volunteers to allow it to continue raising vital funds, you could also help Emmaus Cambridge by volunteering at the centre.

Cyrenians

Cambridge Cyrenians provides accommodation for over 100 homeless people, accounting for a third of the city's supported housing. The focus is on providing homes rather than hostels, with the majority of the charity's accommodation found in houses with three to five bedrooms.

Part of a nationwide network, Cambridge Cyrenians also runs an allotment project and specialised support and services to help people beat their problems with homelessness. The charity's always in need of full and part-time volunteers, and you could get involved with everything from volunteering directly with residents to helping with administrative tasks.
