Creating Beautiful Woodlands

Last year, Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) launched Together for Trees - a campaign to plant 100,000 new trees in the Yorkshire Dales over a two-year period - creating beautiful woodlands for everyone.

Everyone knows that trees are amazing. Yet as much as 80% of the world's forests have been destroyed or irreparably degraded, and our remaining woodlands are under threat from disease and poor management.

A single oak tree can support up to 284 species of insects, yet, in the Yorkshire Dales native broadleaf woodland cover is just 2.7%. Many species of native wildlife are under threat.

Trees do amazing things for our mental and physical wellbeing. YDMT want everyone to have access to them.

The charity works with young carers, homeless people, refugees and asylum seekers. Many of these people live with social isolation, disabilities or mental health problems - they don't have the means to get out into the countryside and walk in the woods. With the charity's help, these same groups have been involved in planting trees or caring for the new woodlands.  

YDMT are making a difference. Over time these trees will go on to create vibrant wildlife habitats which will enrich the landscape and bring huge environmental benefits to the Yorkshire Dales.

Players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised over £2 Million over the last ten years for YDMT. This funding allows the charity to continue to deliver inspirational projects that make a big difference in the Dales.
