The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust is a national charity, and the only charity in the UK that supports athletes as they transition from sport, utilising their unique skills and experience to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people through mentoring programmes.
Over the past two years, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust has received an incredible £200,000 from players of People's Postcode Lottery, enabling the charity to develop and expand its programmes for young people and its support for transitioning athletes.
In January 2015, the Trust was able to deliver its flagship programme, 'Get on Track', to young people in Scotland for the first time. This was a huge milestone, and was only possible thanks to the generosity of players of People's Postcode Lottery.
One young person the programme had a huge impact on was Lorna from Edinburgh. Lorna had a tough start, dealing with homelessness, family mental health issues and anxiety early in her life. Just when she felt things were going well though, she suddenly lost her job and flat, both within the same week. Thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, Lorna was empowered to overcome these issues and find a new sense of worth after completing the 'Get on Track' programme, gaining vital skills and confidence for the future.
Lorna said, "'Get on Track' has had a huge, huge impact on my life and has been a very positive influence on my thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
"The programme has been the key to me turning things around. I have taken inspiration from the athletes and translated what they say into ways to help me build my self-esteem."
Dame Kelly Holmes Trust is delighted to report that 93% of the young people who took part in the first Edinburgh 'Get on Track' programme alongside Lorna have moved into education, employment or training after completing all of their personal development and mentoring sessions. Due to the success of the Edinburgh pilot, the Trust is delighted that its second programme is currently underway in the city.
Thanks to the fantastic players of People's Postcode Lottery, the Trust can continue to expand its work with young people in need, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and attitudes they need to provide for a bright future.
