Glee In Kirkcudbright

12 January 2019 - DG6 4AN - Kirkcudbright - £30,000

There are no January blues for two neighbours in Kirkcudbright who are celebrating after their postcode, DG6 4AN, was announced as Saturday's Street Prize winner.

The win saw Castledykes Road resident Hazel pick up a cheque for £30,000, while the second winner doubled their prize to a staggering £60,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.

Hazel, a retired NHS Nurse, was completely taken aback when she received the knock on her door from the People's Postcode Lottery team. She said, "I thought I might be getting £1,000 so I'm amazed at this. I signed up to play because I knew I'd be supporting charities but I never expected to get anything back, let alone £30,000. This has surpassed all my expectations!"

After recently marking her ruby wedding anniversary with husband Steven, Hazel plans to put some of the windfall towards a special trip away. She commented, "With our anniversary coming the week before Christmas we've not had much chance to celebrate yet, so we'll certainly be doing that now. For our 30th anniversary we went on the Orient Express and it would be lovely to do something similar to mark 40 years. We've also got three grandchildren so it would be lovely to treat them, as well as putting some of the money aside for a rainy day too."

Hazel regularly gives to good causes and that was what initially drew her to play the lottery. She said, "It's difficult to choose which charities to support and it's not possible to give to them all so I like the fact that my £10 a month helps such a wide variety of causes that I wouldn't otherwise know about. If you can afford to, then I would recommend people play because even if you don't win you know your money is going towards helping those who need it."

People's Postcode Lottery Presenter Judie McCourt was in Kirkcudbright to present Hazel with her prize. She said, "I don't think there's any better way to kick start a new year than with a nice big boost to your bank account, so well done to both our lucky players in Kirkcudbright. It was a pleasure to meet Hazel and I hope she and Steven have the most magical time in 2019 celebrating their ruby wedding anniversary."

With 32% of the ticket price going to charities, players of People's Postcode Lottery have now raised £382 Million for over 5,500 good causes across Great Britain and internationally. This prize is part of a draw promoted by War Child.

LGS Community Trust is just one of many nearby charities that has benefited from player support. In 2018, the charity was awarded £19,256 to purchase equipment for an interactive sensory room for children with special needs.

Kirkcudbright wasn't the only winning area this weekend, a lucky player picked up £30,000 in Sunday's Street Prize.
