Celebrations In Church Gresley
Three players in Church Gresley are in for a weekend of celebrations after winning Saturday's Street Prize. The trio, who play with postcode DE11 9QL, have won a whopping £30,000 each.
Caught By Surprise
Grandmother Gillian was out walking the dog when our Street Prize team caught her by surprise. She said, "I was walking Eli, my friend's dog, when my neighbour's daughter said there were three winners on the street but the Postcode Lottery team could only find two of them. Lo and behold, I was the other winner they were looking for! It's absolutely mad - things like this just don't happen to people like me."
Gillian, who has worked as a domestic cleaner for more than 25 years, says the cash will have a massive impact on her life. She said, "I became a grandmother this year to two grandsons, with the youngest coming along just a few weeks ago so I'll be able to help out the family, including my brother who is due to have surgery on both his knees soon. I'm very boring so I'm not even after a holiday but I might treat myself to some new clothes as I've lost a bit of weight recently.
"I'm not in any rush to go mad and spend it all but I still work so this means I can relax a bit now. It's such a comfort knowing that I don't have to worry anymore."
Screamed With Glee
Retiree John was joined by his wife Sheila when he received the knock on his door. The pair were delighted with his £30,000 win, with Sheila screaming out in glee when she saw the figure written on the cheque.
John said, "This is terrific! Sheila is celebrating her 60th birthday next year so we might go somewhere nice now. I'll treat my daughter as well. Irrespective of whether you win or not, the main thing is that you're supporting lots of charities so to get this is a nice bonus."
Sheila has her own plans for the windfall. She said, "I've wanted to go to Disney World in Florida since I was five years old. It would be so special to go and be able to take our granddaughter along with us."
Lisa was our third lucky winner, landing £30,000 after only playing for four months. Lisa and her husband, Tom, got married six years ago but never had a honeymoon. The couple can now treat themselves to the honeymoon of their dreams thanks to their win.
Street Prize Presenter Matt Johnson was in Church Gresley to meet the winners. He said, "Well, I don't think Gillian expected to be walking back through her door with a cheque for £30,000 when she went out on her dog walk today! What a fantastic surprise for her, as well as her neighbours John and Lisa. I hope they have a great time celebrating and toasting their good fortune!"
Good Causes Across Britain
With 32% of the ticket price going to charity, our players have now raised more than £486 Million for good causes across Great Britain and internationally. People's Postcode Lottery players have funded more than 6,500 deserving projects protecting people and planet.
Today's prize is part of a draw promoted by Postcode Education Trust which provides financial support to charities which encourage, inspire or support education and learning in Great Britain.
Local charities win, too, and St Martin's School is one cause close to the winners that players have supported. It was awarded £2,000 last year to purchase trikes, ensuring children with disabilities can experience and enjoy the benefits of cycling.
