Postcode Millions
European Postcode Millions September 2010
It was sunshine and smiles all round in Scarborough on Sunday 12th September as 15 residents living in the area shared a breathtaking £1 Million win.
The community was left blown away by the revelation that one such winner - who wishes to remain anonymous - had pocketed a veritable fortune, and is now half a million pounds better off.
The mystery individual lives in the full winning postcode of YO12 5QF and their newfound wealth has already lent them a brush with stardom, as X-Factor's Danyl Johnson stepped forward to accept a £500,000 cheque on the lucky unknown's behalf.
Another big winner - 75 year old former dinner lady Shirley Stewart - has resolved she'll use her £71,427 prize to fulfill a lifelong dream - and fly to Disneyland Paris. The pensioner, who plays with three tickets, was flabbergasted at her win. "My luck has really turned round! We'll pay off some debts but best of all I can now afford a passport - and my first stop will be Disneyland. I've always wanted to go, and I'll take my daughters too!"
Delighted Shirley and daughter Mandy both plan to give some of the money back to the community - notably the local St Catherine's Hospice, where both volunteer.
For fellow £71,427 winner Denise Howard, 62, the unexpected win means she can treat her five grandchildren to "the best Christmas they'll ever have," with the boost all the more timely as her son has recently been made redundant.
Other big winners on the day included a £47,618 surprise for another publicity-shy player, with ten more Scarborough residents picking up a happy £23,809. "The crowds were incredible here in Scarborough" said People's Postcode Lottery presenter Judie McCourt "and it's not unknown for a postcode to win more than once, so I hope we'll be back in Yorkshire very soon!"
Over 900 locals celebrated to an exclusive and electrifying live set from X-Factor's Danyl Johnson, while newly-crowned Mr and Miss Scarborough joined Lottery presenter Judie McCourt on stage to celebrate players across Great Britain having raised over £9 Million for our charity partners.
