Hospice Care Is More Than You Think

Invaluable support for families at home, made possible thanks to our players

Every week thousands of families are receiving specialist hospice care in their own homes - and the support of People's Postcode Lottery players is helping make this possible.

Linda Finn knows just how important this care is.

The great-grandmother of ten was recently diagnosed with cancer and wants to remain in the home she shares with her husband, John, during her illness.

Her local hospice - Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire - is helping fulfil Linda's wish, with regular visits to make sure she is comfortable and has everything she needs.

Linda says: "It means so much to be here with John and to be close to our family. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to the nurses coming. They look after me so well - and they cheer me up too."

Claire supports Linda with regular visits

Postcode Lottery players have been supporting Hospice UK since 2024 and have raised £1 Million so far. The charity represents more than 200 hospices across the UK and campaigns to protect the vital care they provide to more than 310,000 people each year.

Annually, hospices make 1.4 million visits to people in their own homes, delivering vital palliative and end of life care and providing the day-to-day support someone with a life-limiting or terminal illness might need.

Claire Harding-Edwards is a Health Care Assistant at Isabel Hospice and is one of the team caring for Linda.

Claire says it’s a privilege to work in hospice care

Claire says: "It’s a privilege to look after our patients at home and to take on those caring responsibilities so that families can go back to being families and make the most of the time they have together."

The Faulkner family is another to have benefitted from the support of Isabel Hospice.

Teresa’s husband Michael died at home in July 2025 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

For almost a year, the hospice team visited the family on a daily basis, managing Michael’s pain and symptoms and offering support to Teresa, their daughters Yvonne and Natalie and their grandchildren.

Yvonne, Teresa and Natalie praised the 'amazing' hospice

Natalie explained: "We are so thankful to the hospice. They became family to us in the end because they were with us every day. It made those last moments really precious and gave us the reassurance and time just to be with him."

Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK, said: "Hospice care is more than you think. It isn’t only about managing pain and symptoms on a hospice ward, it’s also the things that make life better for a person and their family outside of the hospice building.

"The things that someone might have once loved doing but now struggle to do because of their illness, like going to their favourite café, seeing a sports match, a day trip to the beach or even just getting out in their garden.

"That is why we are so grateful to the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, and the support they provide to help us ensure everyone can benefit from the very best end of life care.”
