With their twitching noses and distinctive bunny ears, rabbits are inquisitive little animals that love to hop around and explore. They can make for wonderful pets, but sometimes they are neglected or abandoned, or simply need a new home.

Even though they're such popular pets, there are lots of reasons why a rabbit might need a new home. This is why rabbit rescue is so important. There are many charities around the UK that are involved in doing just this, and they can be great to connect with if you're passionate about animals and their welfare.

Volunteering for a charity gives you the chance to see exactly how your time makes a difference. It can be incredibly fulfilling, introducing you to some great people and lovely bunnies along the way.

How To Help Rabbit Rescue Charities

GIVE A RABBIT A HOME

Fostering an animal is one of the biggest and best things you can do to help rabbit rescue charities. Organisations such as the Blue Cross help to find loving homes for all kinds of animals, and are always on the lookout for people who can take on the rabbits that come into their care. If you have the space at home or in the garden, you could always rehome more than one rabbit, or help to keep animals that come in a pair together. But it's not a decision that should be taken lightly - you really do need to be able to give a rabbit a safe, appropriate and loving forever home.

VOLUNTEER AT A REHOMING CENTRE

Rabbits need to be looked after when they arrive at a rehoming centre. This care is often provided by volunteers, allowing you to get hands-on. From socialising and grooming rabbits, to cleaning them out and taking photos and videos for website and social media efforts, there's lots to do. You could also help with driving rabbits between vets and centres, and provide important advice to people who are interested in fostering an animal.

VOLUNTEER AT A CHARITY SHOP

Some animal charities involved in rabbit rescue have shops. This helps to raise funds, so day-to-day volunteers are crucial. Although the more time you can give the better, you may be able to help out for just a couple of hours a week. That will still make a difference, as you organise donations, work on the tills and help customers around the store.

GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR LOCAL WILDLIFE TRUST

Not all rabbits are domestic pets. If you're passionate about animal welfare, you could also help rabbits in the wild. The Wildlife Trusts look after almost 100,000 hectares of land across over 2,300 nature reserves around the UK, operating more than 100 visitor and education centres. You can join a movement of 40,000 volunteers by giving your time to your local Wildlife Trust, helping to protect animals like rabbits and promoting wildlife-friendly practices.

Things To Know Before You Volunteer

Fostering rabbits doesn't necessarily need to be a long-term commitment. You could give a temporary home to an animal recovering from an illness or injury, or while they wait for a permanent family. But if you do choose to take one permanently, it's important that you're sure you can care for them over several years.

Different volunteering roles require different levels of commitment, but even if you only have a couple of spare hours a week you should be able to find something.
