Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Aberdeen

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Aberdeen

Why Volunteer For A Homeless Charity In Aberdeen?

While the UK is a wealthy and developed nation by global standards, there are sadly many cases of homelessness across its cities and towns. Aberdeen is one such place. However, it's also somewhere where the number of people sleeping rough on the streets is slowly starting to decline - not least thanks to the area's homeless charities. No one should be without a home.

To help further reduce the rate of homelessness in Aberdeen, why not support one of the many wonderful organisations in the city? From Aberdeen homeless charities that provide vital support services to those that offer accommodation options for young people at risk, there are many organisations that could always do with extra volunteers or fundraisers.

Homeless Charities In Aberdeen That Need Your Support

Aberdeen Cyrenians

Founded over 50 years ago, Aberdeen Cyrenians is one of the city's largest homeless charities that provides support for those experiencing any degree of homelessness. In addition to providing short term accommodation for up to 29 people, the charity also offers advice and aid to those tackling addictions or those who have been victims of domestic abuse.

Aberdeen Cyrenians also tries to educate the community about homelessness and prevent more people from ending up on the streets in the first place. The volunteer-run Street Alternatives programme is another wonderful service which allows the city's homeless to access showers, shelter, food and washing facilities four times a week.

As well as joining the 60+ volunteers who currently help run Street Alternatives, you could offer to sort any food, clothing and toiletries donated to the charity - or donate some yourself - as well as assist with the Aberdeen Cyrenians' many fundraising appeals.

Aberdeen Foyer

Aberdeen Foyer is a social enterprise, started up in 1995, to assist young people in the city who were already living on the streets or at risk of becoming homeless. The charity offers a wide range of support, from safe supported housing through to health and wellbeing services like counselling and assistance with tackling an addiction.

Aberdeen Foyer also run an employability scheme that places people in jobs at local businesses where they can learn valuable skills. Alongside this, the Foyer Futures programme provides tailored education and mentoring.

If you'd like to help, volunteer at Aberdeen Foyer directly and use your own skills to assist with the charity's many services, or get involved with a fundraising event like a fun run or the annual Sleep Out.

Shelter Scotland

Shelter is a UK-wide homeless charity that offers multiple services to those in need, from housing assistance and advice, through to lobbying for better laws around homelessness and housing crises.

In Aberdeen, you'll find two Shelter charity shops that raise vital funds for the homeless. Why not donate high-quality items that you no longer need or even get in touch to see if they need any new volunteers? Shelter also run regular fundraising events which are great ways of showing your support.

Turning Point Scotland

Based across Scotland, including an office in Aberdeen, Turning Point Scotland is an organisation that specifically provides housing support to those who have mental health issues or neurological conditions.

In Aberdeen, the charity can provide professional advice on getting people back into employment, through Rosie's Social Enterprise, which also organises work placements in four different local businesses. Turning Point Scotland also run an Aberdeen Housing Support Service that offers emergency aid as well as long term support.

Get involved with Turning Point Scotland by contacting the charity about volunteering in Aberdeen, or by organising a fundraising challenge or event to help boost the charity's donations.
