Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Islington

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Islington

Around 500 families submitted homeless applications to Islington Council in 2017/18. Almost half of these were accepted. The London borough also has a problem with rough sleepers. A count late in 2018 showed there were more than 40 people sleeping on the streets in the area.

It's awful to think of anyone being forced to sleep rough at any time of year, never mind when the temperatures plummet below zero during the cold winter months. Thankfully, there are a number of Islington charities which help people in this position, but they couldn't operate without the help of people like you.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to lend your support to a cause that can mean the difference between life and death. Whether you want to learn some new skills, build up your experience for your CV or you just want to give something back by doing something positive with your spare time, read on to learn more about some of the best homeless charities Islington has to offer.

HOMELESS CHARITIES IN ISLINGTON THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Single Homeless Project

Set up by a group of homeless people in the mid-1970s, Single Homeless Project has been helping some of London's most excluded and vulnerable adults ever since. The charity supports people who are already homeless, at risk of falling into homelessness and people who have multiple complex needs.

It does this by providing support and accommodation, promoting wellbeing and enhancing opportunity, as well as being a voice for change. You could play your part by volunteering with Single Homeless Project and assist with things like health and fitness classes, gardening projects or peer mentoring.

Pilion Trust

If you want to help a relatively small, local organisation with your volunteering, Islington has charities such as the Pilion Trust that will be incredibly grateful for your time. Having opened its first shelter in 2010, the charity has helped approximately 1,500 young people affected by homelessness in the years since.

In addition to providing a safe and secure place for people to sleep, the Pilion Trust also runs workshops on everything from life skills, financial planning and tenancy rights, as well as fitness, art and creative writing classes. Find out ways you can volunteer with the Pilion Trust.

Crisis

Crisis was established in 1967 in response to the UK's growing homeless crisis and is now one of Britain's leading charities in this field. The charity provides an all-encompassing support service to help people affected by homelessness, as well as a huge effort over winter through the Crisis at Christmas initiative.

You could volunteer with Crisis by helping out at the charity's head office on London's Commercial Street or even by getting involved at your local Skylight centre.

Depaul UK

Depaul UK has been helping disadvantaged young people across Britain for more than 30 years, maintaining the core belief that no young person should ever have to spend a night sleeping rough. The charity has taken this mantra to a range of countries abroad, and offers services in places like France and the United States, as well as the Republic of Ireland.

You could volunteer with Depaul UK at the charity's head office at Sherborne House in London. The charity is also looking for Nightstop hosts to provide emergency support to young people in their hour of need.
