Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Peterborough

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Peterborough

If you're looking to get involved with some good causes in your local area, helping a homeless charity is a great place to start. People who end up living on the streets are some of the most vulnerable in our communities - and they need all the support they can get from both individuals and charities.

Why Volunteer For A Homeless Charity In Peterborough?

In Peterborough, it was reported in 2018 that over 1,000 people were listed as homeless. To help bring these numbers down, why not get involved with one of the amazing charities in the area that assist homeless people?

Homeless Charities In Peterborough That Need Your Help

The Trussell Trust Food Bank

This national charity has food banks across the UK that provide emergency bundles of food to those in need. In Peterborough, you'll find the Trussell Trust Food Bank distributes food from seven locations around the city, including the Salvation Army. It's able to assist people who have been referred to the foodbank by health services, the police and welfare charities by swapping vouchers for nutritious tinned and dried food.

The Peterborough Foodbank solely relies on donations of food items from individuals, other charities and local businesses. You could also support the organisation by helping greet people and distribute food parcels at the centres, or sort through donations at their Peterborough warehouse.

Cross Keys Homes

Founded in 2004, Cross Keys Homes is Peterborough's largest social housing landlord that's been able to find safe and affordable housing and shelters for around 14% of the city's residents.

As well as helping to combat homelessness by building more affordable homes, green spaces and leisure facilities, it also aids the city's most vulnerable through its emergency shelters, 24-hour advice service and supported accommodation.

Cross Keys Homes is committed to helping out the community through its education and employment training programmes, too.

Show your support for Cross Keys Homes by taking a look at its current volunteering opportunities, which vary from assisting with admin work to working directly with clients who are in need of their sheltered housing programmes.

Hope Into Action

Working with local churches, Hope into Action is a fantastic charity that helps provide shelter for rough sleepers. It offers high quality accommodation solutions for the homeless - places that feel like homes rather than just beds for the night.

Hope into Action was first set up in Peterborough but now has over 30 homes across the UK. While the charity works to find suitable accommodation units, the churches they're associated with provide emotional support, as well as practical things like furniture for the homes, clothing and work experience opportunities.

There's a great variety of volunteering positions with Hope into Action, from admin roles and marketing, to helping maintain and inspect all the sheltered housing units. You could also get involved with one of its charity events in Peterborough such as their annual Big Sleep Out or a local fun run.
