Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Slough

Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Slough

According to homeless charity Shelter, Slough was previously reported among the 50 worst-affected areas in the UK when it comes to homelessness. Despite boasting the country's highest concentration of global corporate headquarters outside London, there are more than 1,100 homeless people in the town.

This means the work carried out by the homeless charities Slough plays host to is hugely important, so why not get involved and donate your time with some volunteering?

Helping out in this way is a wonderful thing to do, and can be hugely beneficial not only for the people you help, but also for yourself. From gaining skills and building up your CV to meeting lots of great new people, you can learn more about some of the brilliant Slough charities that are involved in the fight against homelessness below.

HOMELESS CHARITIES IN SLOUGH THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Slough Homeless Our Concern

Since starting its work in 1997, Slough Homeless Our Concern (SHOC) has gone on to help over a thousand people who were homeless or at risk of homelessness. Based at a day centre in Slough on Ragstone Road, it provides a full range of services which are tailored to each individual's needs.

If you want to help give people who use the centre the best possible chance of turning their lives around and leaving homelessness firmly in the past, you could look into volunteering with the charity as a support worker who provides advice and training. Alternatively, you could get behind SHOC's effort to provide as many meals and showers as possible, be it by getting in the kitchen or helping with cleaning duties.

Slough Foodbank

If you want to help prevent people going hungry through your volunteering Slough has a branch of the incredible Trussell Trust charity. This organisation boasts a network of more than 1,200 foodbanks, with Slough Foodbank running distribution centres in places such as Cippenham and Langley, as well as in the town centre on Windsor Road and Wexham Road.

You could volunteer with Slough Foodbank and help out with tasks like handing out food parcels, sitting down with clients and providing support or even by helping out as a driver with collections and deliveries. You could also donate any spare tins of food that you may have at home.

Slough Furniture Project

Founded on the Britwell Estate in 1994, Slough Furniture Project helps underprivileged local people who are on low incomes or receiving state benefits. It collects all types of furniture and soft furnishings, as well as kitchen utensils, books, ornaments, toys and bric-a-brac, and relies on the generous donations from local people.

You could help out by donating some of your own things you no longer use. You could go a step further and volunteer with Slough Furniture Project in its shop and help out by sorting items and collecting them in the van.

Crisis

A brilliant charity that's attempting to drive the UK to a place where we can end homelessness for good, Crisis was established back in 1997 and is a hugely respected voice in this field. As well as its campaigning efforts, the charity also provides a wide-ranging support service to help people set out on a new path away from problems associated with homelessness.

Whether you're joining campaigns, getting involved at the nearest Crisis Skylight centre or catching a train into London to help out at the charity's head office, there are many ways you could volunteer with Crisis.
