Circular Economy Boost
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has been awarded over £2 Million from players of People's Postcode Lottery to support its efforts in tackling climate change.
Awarded as part of People's Postcode Lottery's Postcode Climate Challenge initiative, the £2 Million boost will allow the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to demonstrate the opportunities the circular economy brings in tackling one of the biggest global challenges we face.
Circular Economy Transformation
Our players have long supported the Foundation's commitment to circular economy transformation, including the Jeans Redesign project which is working to ensure jeans never end up as waste.
Recognising that today's wasteful economy is fuelling climate change and the destruction of our natural world, the Foundation's Jeans Redesign project has brought together major names from across fashion to change the industry and create circular jeans.
The Jeans Redesign Guidelines ensure jeans are produced to be used longer - made to be made again - and are made in ways that are better for garment workers and the environment by using less harmful chemicals in the production process.
Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People's Postcode Lottery, said, "The Jeans Redesign is a great example of how all clothing could be made from safe and renewable materials, and demonstrates the circular economy in action, at scale. To make this happen, businesses have worked together to change the system, and with continued support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation can work to further accelerate a transition across the global fashion industry. It's a win for charity and a win for our climate."
Dame Ellen MacArthur explained, "Waste and disposability are woven into today's economy fuelling climate change and pollution. Working in this collaborative way and using circular economy tools, has enabled us to rethink how we design, make, and use products. Put simply, we cannot fix our climate, unless we fix the economy, and we're incredibly grateful support from players of People's Postcode Lottery is enabling us to do just that."
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and in a year which highlights awareness with events such as the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), it sits at the top of global agendas. With ongoing support from our players, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is able to show how using the tools a circular economy gives us can tackle this and other global issues.
