Future For Ancient Woodland

Ambassador Matt Johnson visited Perthshire's Kinclaven Bluebell Wood with Woodland Trust to understand more about this amazing, ancient resource

TV presenter and People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador Matt Johnson visited Kinclaven Bluebell Wood recently to find out about the importance of woodlands for our environment and our wellbeing.

The wood was purchased by Woodland Trust, which has received over £10 Million of funding thanks to our players. Woodland Trust bought this region in the summer of 2017, to protect and enhance the area. Local schools and volunteers are helping the charity to plant 34,000 new trees, to expand the existing woodland coverage.

George Anderson, Communications Officer at Woodland Trust, described each of the trees as "a soldier in the battle against climate change" because of their ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

George said, "We're all starting to get tuned in to climate change these days and there are lots of things we need to look at, but the easiest thing we can do? Let's get more trees. The potential that areas like this have is so special."

Kinclaven Bluebell Wood is among the 1% of ancient woodlands that remain in Scotland.

Matt Johnson visited the site after presenting two lucky winners in Luncarty with cheques for £30,000 each. He said, "It's incredible to see the work that is being done thanks to funding raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery, like the two winners just down the road from here. I've been really inspired by hearing from George how big a difference planting and protecting trees can have on the environment, and it's also struck me how beneficial spending time in natural areas like this can be for your mental health. I'd encourage everyone to get out and explore their local woods."

People's Postcode Lottery players have raised more than £450 Million to date for a range of fantastic projects across Britain and around the world. 32% of the ticket price goes to support charities and good causes.
