Hope In The Face Of Climate Crisis

Lifeline to families in Kenya
Monicah farming in Kenya

Extreme weather devastates Kenyan communities, leaving families hungry and in need.

In these communities, 95% of whom rely on farming to earn a living, are facing the worst drought in 40 years.

Work in Taveta, Kenya, led by the British Red Cross, working closely with the Kenya Red Cross Society, is setting out to prove there is hope in building climate-resilient communities.

The charities provide food security and livelihood programs, supporting 5,000 men, women, and children in some of the most marginalized communities. This lifeline is possible thanks to funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery.

Monicah, a farmer from Taita-Taveta, is benefiting from player support. She is a force of nature with an infectious laugh, but even she admits she has never seen a drought situation like this.

She added, "This is far more severe than when I was young."

She is learning new farming techniques that better suit drought conditions and receiving seeds to grow crops that can withstand extreme weather. Selling her crops has enabled her to pay her daughter's school fees, giving her a chance for a brighter future.

Monicah is just one of the thousands of people benefiting from programmes run by the British Red Cross - thanks to the funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery. The programmes are designed to meet immediate needs while providing long-lasting solutions to communities in need.

In a time where extreme weather is becoming more and more frequent, it's easy to feel helpless.

But there is hope - through building resilient futures by providing communities with the tools and knowledge they need to adapt and thrive.

For farmers like Monicah, the impact of this support is life-changing.

The video featured below was filmed in Taita-Taveta in December 2022 during Kenya's short rainy season. It shows some of the income-generating work and long-term adaptation solutions that players support and how it helps.

Player Support

"Millions of people around the world feel the devastating impact of climate change. Through collective efforts, we can intervene and respond to climate-related disasters and emergencies.

"From floods in the UK to droughts in Kenya, we are working in 192 countries to help communities in need. The generous support of players of People's Postcode Lottery has been instrumental in enabling the British Red Cross to carry out its vital work, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals. And we say thank you." said Zoe Glass, Strategic Funding Advisor, British Red Cross.

As we face an uncertain future, we must remember that every action we take can make a difference, no matter how small. By supporting programmes like this, we can help to build a more climate-resilient world where everyone has the chance to succeed.

The British Red Cross has received over £13.9 Million awarded by Postcode International Trust, thanks to funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery.
