Inspiring New Generations
The Community Energy Fortnight, running from 22nd June until 7th July, features a unique project named PowerPaired, which is calling for schools up and down the country to become their own mini power stations by hosting community-owned renewable energy projects.
Tens of thousands of British school children have recently taken part in school strikes - joining a global youth movement to call on governments to take action on climate change. Hosting community-owned renewable energy projects provides a great opportunity to put power back into the hands of schools and local communities. Such initiatives will help the environment and provide wonderful and exciting opportunities for children to learn about how energy works, inspire behaviour change and encourage the next generation to take part in the transition to a more sustainable future.
Hosted by international sustainability non-profit Forum for the Future, player-supported project PowerPaired is a new online platform that will make it easier for community groups to develop their own renewable energy projects.
A Matchmaking Platform
The site provides a 'matchmaking' service between community groups and the people who own appropriate sites for generating energy. By pairing up, groups can generate lower-cost power to meet on-site energy demand, feeding the surplus into the national grid.
Martin Hunt, PowerPaired project director said, "With over 30,000 schools across Great Britain, there is huge untapped potential for schools to take action on climate change, support local communities and inspire young people by hosting community-owned renewables. Thanks to the players of People's Postcode Lottery, PowerPaired is able to make it a lot easier for schools to reduce their own emissions, whilst boosting their finances and supporting local community enterprise. It's a win-win."
The Community Energy Fortnight showcases inspiring examples of communities who are actively reducing carbon emissions with renewable energy and efficiency technologies whilst helping people in their communities at the same time.
