Amgueddfa Cymru's core objective is 'the advancement of the education of the public'. The charity's vision is to be a world-class museum of learning. Today, the charity is the largest provider of learning outside the classroom in Wales. It runs seven national museums across Wales, managing a range of collections of international significance. It operates some of the best known museums and galleries in the UK, attracting over 1.6 million visitors each year.
Players of People's Postcode Lottery have awarded Amgueddfa Cymru a staggering £1,175,000 to date. This year, player support is enabling Amgueddfa Cymru to improve and widen its educational offering across Wales.
Through its educational programmes, Amgueddfa Cymru is addressing the social challenges of contemporary Wales, and in particular unemployment, poor health and wellbeing, and low educational attainment. 500,000 school children, students, families, young people and adults are engaging with Amgueddfa Cymru's bilingual learning programmes annually.
Our players are also supporting Amgueddfa Cymru's redevelopment of the St Fagans National Museum of History. This project will provide a stage for Amgueddfa Cymru's life-long learning ambitions and allow for a growth in visits from 600,000 to 850,000 per annum, including:
- eight times more learning space (the annual number of learners will grow from 140,000 to 230,000),
- two major new galleries showcasing internationally important collections,
- two new historic buildings, an Iron Age farmstead and a medieval princes' court, and
- a sustainable new building, 'Gweithdy' ('Workshop' in Welsh), allowing visitors to participate in crafts.
Amgueddfa Cymru believes that culture and heritage can change lives. By supporting the charity to offer accessible museums with a wide-ranging educational programme, our players are helping Amgueddfa Cymru to be a leader in the cultural sector and break down barriers for young people and those in most need.
