Take A Bough
Glasgow ash named Tree of the Year 2025.
A towering ash which sits on one of Glasgow's busiest streets has been crowned Woodland Trust Tree of the Year.
Known locally as The Only Tree on Argyle Street, it beat off stiff competition from nine other contenders in the competition, which is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

More than 30,000 people voted for their favourite.
The final shortlist included a majestic cedar that The Beatles once climbed and a solitary, skinny beech in the final scenes of the film ‘1917’.
The Beatles’ tree is in the grounds of London’s Chiswick House and the ‘1917’ lollipop-shaped tree, which featured in Sam Mendes’ First World War film, is on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.

Estimated to be over 1,000 years old, the band Radiohead named their 2011 album after the tree, having spotted it while recording nearby.

They are as much part of our heritage as any literature."
The Woodland Trust is the largest conservation charity in the UK, aiming to protect and restore ancient woodland, whilst establishing native trees and woods to create thriving and resilient landscapes for wildlife. Our players have raised more than £28 Million for the charity.
The Argyle Street ash will now go on to represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year 2026 contest.
