Take A Bough
The contenders have been shortlisted for Woodland Trust's Tree Of The Year 2025, with the winner going on to represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year finals.
A majestic cedar that The Beatles once climbed and a solitary, skinny beech in the final scenes of the film 1917 - are among the 10 contenders shortlisted for Woodland Trust’s Tree Of The Year competition, which is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
Nine of the trees have been selected by an expert panel with a further wildcard nominee chosen by the public.
This year's wildcard contender is a towering ash which sits on one of Glasgow’s busiest streets, known locally as The Lone Tree of Finnieston or The Only Tree on Argyle Street.

The Beatles' tree is in the grounds of London’s Chiswick House and the 1917 lollipop-shaped tree, which featured in Sam Mendes' First World War film, is on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.

Another favourite from Wiltshire is an ancient oak known as King of Limbs, in recognition of its sprawling branches. Estimated to be over 1,000 years old, the band Radiohead named their 2011 album after the tree, having spotted it while recording nearby.

Woodland Trust Patron, actress and author, Dame Judi Dench said: "Our oldest trees hold more stories than Shakespeare; some were putting down roots long before he began writing, more than 400 years ago. They are as much part of our heritage as any literature."
The Woodland Trust is the largest conservation charity in the UK, aiming to protect and restore ancient woodland, whilst establishing native trees and woods to create thriving and resilient landscapes for wildlife. Postcode Lottery players have raised more than £28 Million for the charity.
