"Autism is a difference, not a deficit. Differences are to be valued not 'fixed'. My normal is different from your normal and the aim shouldn't be conformity but wellbeing." Autistic member of Autism Education Trust Young Person's Panel.

What Is Your Superpower?

To celebrate World Autism Awareness Week, Daisy Chain, a Tees Valley-based charity supporting autistic children, young people, and their families, is asking beneficiaries, 'What is your superpower?' Daisy Chain wants to empower people with autism by recognising autism talent and celebrating difference not deficit.

The charity, which has received £3,231,878 in support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, provides frontline services to those impacted by autism, currently helping more than 4,500 families.

For almost 20 years, Daisy Chain has provided support alongside developing transitional programmes to help empower people moving into adulthood to live independently. These programmes include employability services, support with housing, benefits and independent living, and life skills workshops such as first aid and fire safety.

Providing Support

Support from players of People's Postcode Lottery has positively impacted many areas of Daisy Chain's frontline services, including:

  • The Virtual Support Service, which was developed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing telephone and face-to-face assistance. The service continues to offer a vital lifeline to people who need advice and guidance.

  • The Housing, Benefit and Independent Living programme, which is celebrating its first full year since launch, and is looking forward to a second year with support from players of People's Postcode Lottery.

  • The Wellbeing programme is a person-centred and nurturing service providing support that is personalised to an individual's unique experiences, wishes, feelings and goals.

Through its many services, and thanks to funding from players of People's Postcode Lottery, Daisy Chain continues to focus on drawing on and developing the strengths of the individual, allowing them to discover their 'superpower' and supporting them to lead a life that is meaningful to them.
