Guiding Girls Forward
Girlguiding provides opportunities for girls and young women to grow
September 8th, 2015
With help from players of People's Postcode Lottery, Girlguiding is giving more girls and young women the opportunity to enjoy fun, friendship, challenge and adventure.
Girlguiding works with over half a million girls and young women between the ages of five and 25 in all areas of the UK, giving them a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, develop their character and be the best they can be.
In Girlguiding, girls are encouraged to try everything from abseiling to public speaking. With each new experience, they grow in confidence, learn skills for life and make a positive difference to themselves and their communities. From Rainbows through to Brownies, Guides and The Senior Section, girls are empowered to fulfil their potential and speak out about what matters to them.
Funding from players, which so far totals £300,000, has made a huge difference to girls and young women. Last year, the funding enabled Girlguiding to host 'Camp CEO', a week-long business boot camp that paired girls with top female business leaders to inspire them to aim for the top.
This year, players are supporting Girlguiding's 'Growing Guiding' initiative to reach out to even more girls and young women, so that they can enjoy the huge benefits guiding has to offer. Players' support has provided funding for local events to help bring in and train more volunteers from local communities, giving more girls the opportunity to benefit from guiding.
With 80,000 girls waiting to join up, Girlguiding is in need of more volunteers in order to both support existing units and set up new ones. Players' support is going a long way towards helping the charity accomplish this goal, so that all the girls who want to join will be able to access the benefits of guiding.
Already, support from players has helped Girlguiding run a meet and greet event in Chellaston, Derbyshire that attracted new volunteers. This led to a brand new Rainbows group opening in the area for girls aged five to seven – the 1st Chellaston Rainbows.
Laura Price, the Development Worker for Girlguiding Midlands, said, "With support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, we're making sure that all girls who want to be a part of guiding can be. It's great that we've recruited enough volunteers to open a new group!"Return to news archive
