Heritage Open Days
Celebrations of cultural heritage, managed by National Trust, are taking place in September this year
July 19th, 2016
Every year Heritage Open Days, the UK's biggest annual grassroots celebration of cultural heritage, makes history matter. Over 45,000 organisers in communities across England will step up to the mark to give their time, creativity, and skills to a range of fun activities. The festival is managed by National Trust and takes place from the 8th to 11th September this year.
This is the second year that players of People's Postcode Lottery have supported Heritage Open Days, which continues to grow, not only in the number of events, but the in diversity and quality of activities right across England.
Thanks to the £500,000 raised by players, National Trust can support more new towns and cities such as the historic spa town of Buxton, taking part for the first time with lots to see and do for all the family.
Organiser John Phillips explains, "It's a pleasure to be part of it all. We're a bit spoilt in Buxton when it comes to heritage, so I think it's good to encourage people to sit back once in a while and look at the amazing things we have with fresh eyes. We're really excited by it all."
To celebrate the fantastic support from players, People's Postcode Lottery are running a social media competition to win a VIP weekend for two to visit Buxton's Royal Heritage. This includes a break in a historic hotel and a half-day spa experience. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the winners to discover one of England's leading spa towns and experience the passion of the people who share the stories that make Heritage Open Days so special.
Patron Loyd Grossman explains, "Heritage Open Days and its army of volunteers play an important role in championing our wonderfully diverse local heritage, opening up doors and keeping access free for these very special four days every year.
"Congratulations to the volunteers at Vision Buxton for galvanizing the town to showcase and celebrate this fantastic story with Heritage Open Days. With such a rich history and so many exciting new developments, this is a great example of a town that's building a future out of its past."
Thanks to the generous support from Players of People's Postcode Lottery, thousands of people across England will be making a difference to their communities this September by being able to share the hidden histories on their doorstep.
There are almost 5,000 Heritage Open Days events taking place between 8th and 11th September. Find out about the activities on your doorstep by checking the Heritage Open Days website at www.heritageopendays.org.uk.Return to news archive
