Record Haul For Porthcawl

13 May - CF36 3QA - Porthcawl - £30,000

There will be celebrations in Porthcawl this weekend as eight neighbours won the Saturday Street Prize after their postcode, CF36 3QA, got lucky. Seven winners won £30,000 each while another, who plays with two tickets, scooped £60,000.

Mathew Roberts was presented with a huge cheque for £60,000 as he plays with two tickets. "I'm so shocked," he said. "I need to sit down with my wife Kelly and have a proper chat about what we'll do with the money. It's hard to comprehend how much money it actually is."

Mathew, who works as a fireman, said, "One thing we'll do is visit my sister in Tenerife. She lives there and we haven't seen her in a while. It’ll be me, my wife and our son and daughter."

Gillian Wride was gobsmacked to be presented with a cheque for £30,000. "I never expected that much," she said. "It's amazing. Really amazing."

Gillian was joined by her husband Vernon when presented with her cheque. "We moved into the area four years ago when we sold our poultry farm. We love it here and it's certainly very lucky! My husband and I are both retired so it's just so good to know the money's there when we need it. We have a large family – four children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren."

Brian Evans was equally shocked to find out he'd won, "It's not every day you get £30,000," he said. "Half of this will go on the kids and grandkids and then my wife, Jen, and I will decide what to do with the rest." Brian, a retired medical liaison representative, was glad to win with his neighbours. "We all know each other," he said. "I would have been gutted to miss out."

Retired police officer Brian Rowlands already knows how to spend his £30,000. "We're getting an extension put in and I wasn’t sure how we were going to pay for it," he said. "This will definitely cover it." Brian will be celebrating with his wife Claire and his son and daughter.

Roger Went was joined by his wife Lynne when he was presented with his cheque. "We had such a great day. The team from People's Postcode Lottery were so lovely and I really enjoyed celebrating with my neighbours," he said. Roger, also a retired police officer, is using the money to supplement his pension and to spoil his three children and four grandchildren.

There were three other £30,000 winners who were not home to receive their cheques, but their winnings will be paid directly into their bank accounts.

Street Prize Presenter Matt Johnson said, "It was great to meet so many winners here in Porthcawl. Most of the neighbours knew each other which was really nice to see. That's what People’s Postcode Lottery is all about – communities winning together."

A minimum of 30% of the ticket price goes directly to charities. Players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised more than £197 Million to date for more than 2,800 good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

A local charity in the winning area that has received support from players is Rhydyfelin Netball Club which was awarded £2,000 last year.

There was also one £30,000 winner in Brigg this weekend, as DN20 0AE was drawn as the winner of the Sunday Street Prize.
